[COM] Adelaide Convention Centre - Stage 3 | $350m
[COM] Re: Adelaide Convention Centre and Riverbank Redevelopment
I don't mind it tbh, sometime uniformity can be just as attractive as other options.
It would be interesting to see what they could do with say a morphett street pedestrian overpass if serious works are going to be completed on the other side of the road.

If the Convention Centre carpark remains exposed like that, I shall personally deliver the staring of a lifetime to the dismal clots who would draw up such a thing.

A few pics in & around the Riverbank Promenade. IMO the Promenade itself is well built & has potential, but the connections to the surroundings are
a bit of a jumble at the Festival Centre end, & minimal at the Morphett Bridge end, if anyone walks that far. The redevelopment should improve the
connections.

Great photos Xaragmata.
With the redevelopment of the Riverside precinct, I sincerely hope the carpark space currently screened with the wood panels fronting onto the raised promenade is replaced with restaurants and cafes. It is currently such a waste of space.

No it means that they've lodged the development application. Events after that are anyone's guess.Ben wrote:Does this mean the development is about to start?

Labor's Torrens redevelopment plan
Premier Mike Rann has made an election promise to revamp the Convention Centre and the River...
DESIGNERS have been asked to lodge expressions of interest for the $394 million redevelopment of the Adelaide Convention Centre.
The first step in the planned revitalisation of the Torrens riverbank area was announced yesterday by Infrastructure Minister Patrick Conlon and Tourism Minister John Rau.
The proposed expansion plan was a key election promise from Premier Mike Rann during the March campaign and included increasing the floor space of the centre and the installation of light and water features in the Torrensnte.
At the time, the tourism and convention industry said expanding the centre and revitalising the riverbank were critical to boosting tourism and promoting business in the city's heart.
Key features include:
AN ADDITIONAL 4200sq m of convention floor space.
REPLACEMENT of the original building with a new 2500 to 3000-seat facility.
PROVISION of additional meeting rooms and the supporting infrastructure.
Mr Conlon said he wanted those bidding for the design contract to investigate links with the broader Riverbank precinct, including with the Festival Centre, Intercontinental Hotel, SkyCity Casino and the redeveloped Adelaide Oval and the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.
"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to redevelop this whole precinct into a social, cultural and economic centre for the city and state as well as reinforcing our reputation as one of Australia's premium convention destinations," he said.
Mr Conlon said the convention centre had already pumped nearly $1 billion into the state's economy and it was "vitally important we continue to maximise our return".
He said the registration of interest process called on industry to assembly teams with a strong commitment to excellence in design and a visition for expanding the iconic facility so it maximised the functional and economic potential of an area critical to the city's vibrancy.
Mr Rau said that since 1987, the convention centre was an important driver for the state's economy because hosting conventions generated more than 15 per cent of Adelaide's accommodation occupancy each year.
He said redevelopment of the centre would ensure the facility continued to compete nationally and internationally for events and conventions.

Interesting news, but I'm unclear on what "DESIGNERS have been asked to lodge expressions of interest" means. It almost reads like they're going to run an open competition for it, which would be super awesome if they did. Imagine if we could have the likes of OMA or MVRDV (apart from being favourites of mine, I thought that perhaps some Dutch architects would help Rini Coolen settle in
) throwing ideas into the ring.
And I also wonder what role Tim Horton and the IDC are going to have in this.

[COM] Re: Adelaide Convention Centre and Riverbank Redevelopment
Through the Australian Civic Trust, i'm engaged with Adelaide Uni to have several architectural students compile their own Riverbank development ideas (covering the Intercontinental, Festival Centre, Casino, AO, Pinky's flat and the Torrens river itself). Good that Rann intends to also include the hospital and presumably a new relocated casino.
Not sure of Mike Rann's intended timing though - fingers crossed these efforts dovetail together as it will be good to get input from all quarters.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

i'd like to see a new intercontinental hotel and office tower on the other side of north tce so we can demolish those 80s buildings; hyatt and riverside and open up the railway station to the riverbank and north tce, chances are they will need to be dozed anyways if we want to improve our rail system.
i'm all for any proposal that makes our main railway station less of a batcave and brings people and activity to the riverbank

The Intercontenental will never be demolished (within next 30 years). There is nothing wrong with it.metro wrote:i'd like to see a new intercontinental hotel and office tower on the other side of north tce so we can demolish those 80s buildings; hyatt and riverside and open up the railway station to the riverbank and north tce, chances are they will need to be dozed anyways if we want to improve our rail system.

There's nothing wrong with the building itself, but it's in the wrong location.
[COM] Re: Adelaide Convention Centre and Riverbank Redevelopment
So your saying Adelaide's cultural boulevard, next to the casino and convention centre, river Torrens and opposite Adelaide's main night spot (Hindley street) is a bad location for a hotel? WTF!Isiskii wrote:There's nothing wrong with the building itself, but it's in the wrong location.

What kind of improvement to or rail system would require their destruction?metro wrote:i'd like to see a new intercontinental hotel and office tower on the other side of north tce so we can demolish those 80s buildings; hyatt and riverside and open up the railway station to the riverbank and north tce, chances are they will need to be dozed anyways if we want to improve our rail system.
How would any proposal that makes our main railway station less of a batcave bring people and activity to the riverbank?i'm all for any proposal that makes our main railway station less of a batcave and brings people and activity to the riverbank
