If I read the article right, the plan is to split the apartments between public housing tenants, low income earners, and sales on the open market (plus the 30 apartments for homeless youth). It sounds a creative approach to me, I like the sound of it.
Imo, good cities welcome a mix of people, they are not gentrified enclaves. And if we want young people in the city (and we
do want that) we need affordable housing.
It is also planned for the site of a current carpark, according to the story. Get rid of the carpark and build this, I say.

My gut feeling, is that this project and the Kings Apartments project are different. For example, consider the diagram provided of the Kings Apartments. They appear to be located more to the north of the proposed low-income tower. Further, the image of the 15 level low income tower reveals that parts of the carpark at the 114 Waymouth Street lot will remain, which implies that such land will be used by the Kings Apartments.

I've put the Kings Apts plans posted earlier in this thread over the NearMap view of the site. Kings Apts structures in pink. Then I've put what I think the new render represents as any of the blue boxes. They both occupy the same space.

Yes, the new structure doesn't take up all the site. But Kings Apts as we know it appears to be scrapped. Which is a shame, I thought it looked very interesting.
I hold off updating the thread title until we figure out what's going on.

The thing that has always worried me about vertical social housing has been what the building would look like. I think from seeing what has been built in Europe and the USA, the standard of vertical social housing has been horrid. As such, this is what has caused me worry. However, from seeing what the government is building in Light Square and Ifould Street, and now the design here, my worries have been eased. Although nothing special, the proposed design is better than some of the recent buildings for students or even those built for high-income earners.
Regarding the type of tenant, I hope the prospective tenants are properly screened. I hope that the people chosen to live here, are those which actually have a reason to live in the city. For example, I hope that people such as those which work as cleaners, waiters, hairdressers etc in the city are given first priority.
I was dissapointed to read the quality of the comments written on AdelaideNow. A lot of people raised the possibility of this becoming a slum. I think this is just fear-mongering. Such buildings become slums in other parts of the world because they are built in areas of disadvantage. The example from oversease has taught us that the best way to avoid the development of slums is to prevent the fragmentation of the city into areas of exclusively rich people and other areas of exclusively poor people. This example is a small step into preventing the city from becoming an exclusive enclave of the rich. A city is a more vibrant place if there is a mix of people, not just a generic demographic.

WHY are they constantly so negative. They should know the damage this does. I don't know anyone involved in the production of AD Now - it seems that they don't like Adelaide and can't see past a blinkered viewpoint.
Re the apartments - i hope they go through, but without a commie block appearance. NOTE - I gather the CBD pop. is now 24000 from ABS stats.

Slightly off topic, but can I suggest that we call them "News Limited Comments" from now on. I feel that it is doing Adelaide a disservice to constantly be associated with such negativity. Read any of the News Limited online news services and the majority of the comments regarding ANY story are the same dim witted tripe. It's not exclusively a South Australian thing.
