OH la la it’s French film time. French cinema lovers have just a week to wait until the Alliance Francaise French Film Festival opens at the Palace Nova East End Cinemas.

Featuring 43 films and documentaries, the 14-day festival is the largest foreign film festival in Australia. Besides marking its 21st year in the country, the festival will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of SA’s own Alliance Francaise, a club which promotes French conversation, literature and art.

A third more screenings have been added to the program this year due to demand, including some of the finest productions released by the French film industry in the past 12 months.

Alliance Francaise director Philippe Marse says the festival covers a range of genres, from action to comedy, and aims to showcase the French way of life.

“I think the festival is quite representative of a lot of different movies,” he says. “It’s very open so you can enjoy all types of movies, some you might love but others might not be your cup of tea.”

Although things will now quieten down a bit (name a place which doesn't quieten down over winter?), Adelaide will most definately not 'fall asleep', 'go into hibernation' or 'roll up the footpaths' as suggested by our own members on SSC.

Indeed, the onus is on us to keep the momentum. When you visit a show for the fringe for example, very few people just visit the show and go home immediately afterwards. Instead, people have a meal, drink a beer at a bar/pub or go to a nightclub. These things don't dissapear between April-December. They are still there. Instead of staying in your living room and complaining how you have nothing to do, go into town and visit those places which you enjoyed so much during the first 3 months of the year.

I also recommend people read the Adelaide Review or the City Messenger. There are still plenty of arty and cultural things to do and attend between April and December.

For example, Tasting Australia will be on 29 April - 6 May 2010. Tasting Australia is the premier food and wine event in Australia.

I should have posted this a couple of days ago - today the ACC and BikeSA are holding Earth Ride. Many city streets and all of the squares will be closed to traffic and people are encouraged to ride & walk between them before heading into Victoria Square for food & demos. The Royal Family will be there on foot, our bikes (along with the rest of our worldly goods & chattels) arrive tomorrow. I wonder if there will be any displays about cargo bikes or bike trailers?

Commencing from the Event Village in Victoria Square, thousands of participants will take the opportunity to walk or ride their bike through the city (passing the 4 themed squares) and soak up the atmosphere of 'car-free' city streets, before returning to the event village for food, entertainment, bike demos and most importantly to meander through the Sustainability Expo. Here you will be able to learn about key issues and solutions around building a more sustainable community - options for sustainable transport, better health outcomes through increased physical activity, healthy natural foods and sustainable use of our environment, to name a few.

HMAS Arunta one of the Royal Australian Navy's Anzac Class Frigates, will be open for inspection by the general public at Techport SA.

The SA Detachment of the RAN Band will be performing on the wharf and Navy Cadets and Defence Force Recruiting staff will be available to talk about Navy Careers and Cadet opportunities.

Food and drinks will also be available at the wharf area.

Official recommissioning of E type tram 118.

The official launch of Bogie Open Combination tram E 118 will take place at 2.00pm on Sunday 23 May 2010. The Museum will be opening at 10.00am.

This has been a very long term project for the museum but after much hard work by the volunteers at the museum, one of Adelaide's oldest trams is being prepared for it's recommissioning. 118 was originally built in Adelaide in the 1910-1912 period as a half open/half closed 'combination' tram in which form it ran until 1936 when it was rebuilt as a 'full length' saloon in 1936 and reclassified E1, E1 111 having been in the museum collection since 1957. 118 was withdrawn from service around 1955 and sold as a beach shack at Fisherman's Bay. In 1982, the body of 118 was aquired by the St Kilda Tramway Museum and it has been under restoration since the mid 1990s (although not as a continuous restoration). After an incrediable amount of hard work, 118 is ready for it's recommissioning in it's original E type configuration.

Australia's Premier Food and Wine Festival: Tasting Australia starts this coming Thursday!

Food fest helps stir up the pot

TASTING Australia hits town this week as more than 30,000 people are expected to attend the eight-day food festival.

Among the headline drawcards are Poh Ling Yeow, of Masterchef and now ABC TV, and French-born chef Manu Feildel.

The public can attend 45 different events including demonstrations, tastings and classes.

The Miele Celebrity Cooking Classes with Maggie Beer, Antonio Carluccio and Shannon Bennett are already booked out.

Renae, 10, Harry, 10, and George, 6, (pictured Page One) are among the children who will take part in IGA Kids in the Kitchen, a program teaching the principles of food preparation.

Masterchef’s Andre Ursini will join 22 celebrity and up-and-coming chefs in running the children’s program.

Ursini said more young children were now embracing cooking.

“I have seen the reaction Masterchef has had with young kids and it is huge in schools,” he said.

Ursini said the festival was not just for “food snobs”.

“It’s entertaining, as a lot of the people that are giving demonstrations are performers and chefs.”

Tasting Australia runs Thursday, April 29 to Thursday, May 6, with many of the events held at Elder Park, King William Rd, Adelaide.

respected road safety experts. Fred is Managing Director of the Institute for
Road Safety Research in the Netherlands - one of the best performing countries
