Paving of the underpass approach in Henley Beach Road is close to completion, and Glover Avenue to West Terrace also well advanced. Ready to mark lanes, with 3 eastbound & 2 westbound vehicle lanes (to match the existing HBR lanes) with 2 commuter bike lanes plus the shared foot / bike path. Finishing touches & landscaping also well advanced. Some more pics from Friday, starting at

It looks fantastic, this really is a big stepstone for us in improving our roads. This looks much better than the old bridge.

The chequerboard effect on the concrete walls looks neat. I'm an old Henley Beach boy and use this road regularly to go visit my folks. Looking forward to it opening.

bike / foot path on the nth side. They were pouring concrete for the median strip in Henley Beach Road
when I left.

Is it just me or is the city-bound direction have one extra lanes? It looks wider than Henley Beach - bound lane.

It's not just you; it has an extra dedicated transit lane to match HBR east of South Road, & this will extend to West Terrace. They never built the west-bound lane, but there is no on street parking to obstruct buses.

Underpass opens on schedule on Sunday 13th Jan, with fixed & electronic signs in place, & paving still underway at West Tce &
Henley Beach Rd. Work will continue for up to six weeks after opening to complete footpaths, landscaping etc, and opening
ceremony will be 10 am sunday, with Mike Rann & officials, and public welcome. Not sure where they will be, but project office
on JC Drive should know. Look for the white cars. :)

From the DTEI site:
The Bakewell Underpass will be open to traffic on 13 January 2008.

Works to be completed before the underpass is open are:
  • Installation of lighting
Laying of asphalt pavement through the underpass
Installation of the median, line marking and signage
Surfacing of the shared recreational cyclist and pedestrian path through the underpass
    Installation of the fencing
    Completion of painting throughout
The State Government has also announced that the left lane of Glover Avenue leading into Currie Street will be a dedicated bus and taxi transit lane. The lane will be opened on the same day.

Works to be completed after the underpass is opened include:
  • Resurfacing of James Congdon Drive between Hughes Street and Port Road
Reshaping and resurfacing of the northern slip lane adjacent to Temple Christian College
Landscaping (will not be undertaken until April / May / June when weather conditions are more suitable).

Me too. I checked with DTEI, and they replied promptly:

There is an ad appearing in your local paper
and the Advertiser with details of the event this week - but in short we
are holding a community event this Sunday 13 January commencing at 10am
in the underpass to celebrate its opening. BBQ, drinks, ($1 donation),
coffee and ice creams (normal prices), project displays, street
performers. The official opening / ribbon cutting by the Premier and
Minister for Transport will occur at 11.30. Normal traffic through the
underpass early Sunday afternoon.

An hour and a half to explore the underpass - bring plenty of
digital film. :)

Well, that will give me some time to explore a few of the new bus routes beforehand :)
