All getting into a tangent though, because the case isn't that it should stay purely because the tenancy is a profitable business, but because it's part of the active lived heritage of the area, and that sort of heritage is more than just a facade.

My point wasn't about evaluating the place's value, but rather just pointing to the valuation which is likely the only thing the owner gives a damn about. Places that don't have pokies are starting behind the others (financially) and it's up to them to work their arses off to find a niche to keep up. Obviously cranka has that, but it also sits on some expensive city land which just raises that bar again. Sure, you can obviously make money selling pints for 10 bucks. But in the pubs business, it's not just being profitable, but being profitable enough - see: profit seeking, gaf owners.

Regarding the previous comments about said community that goes there. Cranka was my watering hole for a long time. First place I went for a pint last time I came back to Adelaide too. Funny seeing which faces didn't change there. TBH, everyone is right. It's a welcoming, open, diverse place. It's also a forboding, closed society. It's a harmless crowd and I've also seen 2 bonefide barneys there and 2 other swings (one a fresh air shot). The "core" crowd there was always the punks. After some years you got to know who was the genuine article and who was the eastern suburbs with coloured hair to piss off their dad. And that Jukebox next to the door was the ultimate piss taker. All time moment was when randomly "true colors" started playing, the shocked wtf expression across the bar, then a bunch of purple mohawks all breaking out in song to the chorus. Good times.

The government architect has advised they don't support the proposal in its current form.

Amongst a bunch of other issues with configuration, setback, and some design elements, the architect also recommended retaining the entire existing building, not just the facade, and retaining the actual pub itself due to cultural and social significance

A deal to save the imperilled Crown & Anchor hotel is “imminent”, with Premier Peter Malinauskas understood to have brokered an agreement with the developers behind planned student accommodation on the site.

Mr Malinauskas has reportedly taken “personal carriage” of the issue, speaking directly to developers Wee Hur Holdings Ltd over plans to gut the historic live music venue for a 19-storey accommodation block.

The controversial development plan was lodged by the Singapore-based company in early March, prompting a groundswell of backlash from live music fans, parliamentary debate and criticisms from the state’s Government Architect.

The Advertiser understands the government and Wee Hur Holdings have been involved in a number of meetings since backlash kicked off over the development, with a deal close to being struck.

On FIVEAA on Thursday morning, David Penberthy said an agreed “elegant solution” would only involve one small concession by the Crown & Anchor proprietor.

“This is potentially very good news for fans of live music ... we’re hearing that the Crown & Anchor hotel is close to being saved,” he said.

The government’s deal reportedly strikes a balancing act between protecting the venue’s future, and ensuring it doesn’t deter developers by setting a precedent of intervening in major investments in the CBD.

In July, Environment Minister Susan Close bought the venue more time after pushing back a deadline for submissions to the SA Heritage Council on whether the pub should be included on the state heritage register.

Submissions now close on November 3, until which the hotel’s provisional listing on the register will remain in place.

During the public consultation period for the development, the State Planning Assessment Commission received about 800 submissions from members of the public – a figure which more than doubled SCAP’s record.

On Sunday this week, thousands are expected to rally once more for the venue’s future at Victoria Square (Tarntanyangga) with performances by Dave Gleeson of The Screaming Jets and local Adelaide band LOLA.

A lot of double speak and weasel words in that government non-announcement, a cynical man might suggest they're going to announce the development is going ahead and the Cranker will be replaced by a state funded pop-up venue (that will run dry of funding in 2029 after half a dozen single day events in the parklands), three cheers for Malinauskas you ungrateful wretches how dare you grumble

Would love the know all the details here. At the end of the day it looks like we’ve paid money to not have something we need, being student accom in the Adelaide CBD. JLL just a month or so ago showing a shortage of 2000 beds.

Can't blame anyone for being cynical in situations like this, but before you made this post the state government already announced at/after the rally today that the development plans have changed and the Crown and Anchor is staying.

From the single image attached it looks like Roxie's is unfortunately gone, but hopefully the development agreement also comes with some iron clad contractual stuff that prevents residents of the new building complaining about noise from live music.

There are plenty of lots in the CBD that are either empty, a ground level car park, or occupied by nothing of cultural or heritage value that could be used instead, I mean what happened to the Twin Street proposal? If the demand was really there, more of these proposals in locations that aren't about making a quick buck would be appearing more often.

Don't know if they can make it happen, but fantastic suggestion I've seen is if the Producers could be used as a popup Cranker venue for a couple of years.

Keeps the current operators in business, keeps the routine of various music and comedy nights, is in the same location, and gets some life back into that site.

An 'expedited development process' will raise some ICAC hairs.

It will be very interesting to see the bill proposed to Parliament.

The two year closure is baffling. This could only be the case where the construction requires slewing over the Crown and Anchor; 'soundproofing' (sound reducing) conceivably would never take this long.

A two year closure doesn’t feel a great outcome for the pub’s operators.

If there’s such a shortage of student housing, it’s a shame the Twin Street proposal seems to be going nowhere.
