Does this have a basement? I ask as I saw what appeared to be excavation occurring on the eastern side of the site.

Yes. There's two levels of basement car parking, to be accessed via Penaluna Place.

Oh. So the extension of Petaluma Place wasn't completely about activating the laneway. It was about access to their carpark.

You probably know this, but just in case there's some misunderstanding, according to the development documentation, what they're doing is they're creating a new activated pedestrian connection (blocked off to vehicular access) to Penaluna Place from Franklin Street, using some of the land that's currently part of the site. This will be activated with pop-up retail, trees, chairs and tables and whatnot.

The existing Penaluna Place road will be used to access the carpark, which is probably better than creating extra traffic on Pitt Street, as Pitt Street is still the predominant pedestrian path. Apparently there will be an opening that directs pedestrians using the walkway to access Grote Street to use the eastern footpath so that they avoid the vehicles using the carpark.

It's also worth noting that there could possibly be further laneway activation in the second stage immediately south of this development, although that would contradict the purpose of the opening they're creating that directs people to the other side of the laneway, away from the vehicular traffic.

That said, at the moment, I'm not too gutted about this laneway not being super-activated. There's an ugly open-air private carpark on the eastern side that would need to be developed for this laneway to become a place people want to spend time in.

More excavation as at Saturday 29/4/2017 just about whole site has been dug down about 1/2 a level. Trucks are entering and leaving Via Petaluma Place.

Can they also bulldoze the car park adjacent? It's vile and in such a prime location. A 100+ project would be ace. K THX BI!

There was some sort of event happening on site today and it seems that what's been excavated has been filled back in? I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that's what I saw. Anyone else have an idea of what's going on over there?

There is a tent outside with some fake lawn, but the site is still excavated.

I noticed that equipment on site. I thought piling had already been done a few weeks ago?

It's great to see more and more work occurring on this site!

The previous piling was around the boundaries to shore up the site . The new piling is for the actual building and appears to be deeper judging by the type of piling rig.
