That looked so much better than what we got. The thing we have now is f7cking hideous. Why do they always dumb it down?
Completely agree! The worst part is living in the knowledge that we're stuck with this pile of crap for another 40/50 at-least and by which point people of the time will probably waving theirs arms in the air demanding heritage protection for the building.

I hope I am not alone, but I like the variance between the different stages. A uniform design would have - in my opinion, at least - looked overbearing for such a small area.

My only complaint is that we didn't stick with this design for the latest stage. It was far more imposing, far more vibrant, and fit in better.

I don't think they dumbed it down, I think they overthought it with the result being a mess of ideas. I would have preferred the glass lantern elegance of main building at least carried through to the west. That would have presented a much more open face to the riverbank. Opportunity missed, c'est la vie...

As for the new plenary building, I actually don't mind the design but I'm not convinced that it was well-designed for the location. We shall see.

The issue I think is that they tried to blend the new West building into the existing building. The contrasting styles make the join awkward and messily resolved from the northern aspect. Had they at least made them appear as seperate buildings, then I think they would have sat better together. The plenary building will be seperate, and I think will fit in much nicer. I also think the West building may get better in context once the two Uni buildings are complete, as there are visual cues that appear to be carried through (particularly with the University of Adelaide building).

I'm still of the opinion that the first plenary proposal would have been a better fit for the Riverbank.

The one we're getting looks incredibly overbearing. Happy to be proven wrong and hopeful the final outcome will dominate less than the render suggests.

Does anyone have any idea whether there are plans to improve the North Terrace facade of the building? They can't honestly leave it looking like it does now, looks awful!

Can someone clarify what they are building in this stage? Is this the turquoise coloured eastern building or something else? I haven't been following this project and notice that the thread title implies that it is complete.

Sort of looks like....the bastard off spring of the Festival Centre/Melbourne Arts Centre.
Very brutalist 70's feel to it. Really quite ugly.

That's not brutalist at all. Neither the form nor the fact that it has cladding suggest that style.
