Thanks mate! State Politics? No….my long term goal is to build BIG cities in Asia, perhaps India?
Being on council is not just about doing the community service (which I love doing) and making a difference, it’s also another qualification and education into how to run corporations that run cities. I am addicted to cities and learning about them…just like SimCity only real!
My wife and daughter think I am a nerd – but I’m a nerd that loved the AC/DC concert...how does that work?! : )
No probs about not being able to vote - bet you know someone that does that has never voted before! Time we got younger people voting in Local Government elections - imagine if they did...

Question, Does the council have powers to boot out the North Adelaidean whinging mob who whined about the cricket, the ac/dc concert, the Fringe and even the fricken pigeons in their backyard being to loud or is that impossible due to democracy

No, because those are the very people that vote for them in the first place!

Agree fully with councellor yarwood's 'rant' of 1/3/10.
(Sorry for late entry into discussion - no computer access for 9 days).
However, as we all, know, to get public transport usage to increase essentially needs a cultural paradym shift in perceptions in people's minds - often strongly helped by financial 'persuasions' and 'availability'. This can take years - brisbane is supposed to be the highest per capita user of public transport at present - 'persuasions' include strong advertising, inconvenience with cars, poor current road infrastructure, too many traffic jams, greater costs with cars, increasing road rage, good electric rail services (SIX carriages in every train to cater for users), improving bus services. Note - the ease by which cars are used on Adelaide's road system contributes to more. Ie Long flat roads, few corners and bends in many areas, wide streets, easy access to the CBD.

Thanks for your notes, David. I may not mention it every time but I do read every one you post here. Good luck with your campaign on transparency. I support you in that endeavour. And I'd further support any attempt to bring the donations ban here. Too many self serving types get into local government (vast generalisation but it does happen).
Just a small point David, a tiny point. I'd be loath to draw a direct correlation between UPark's free parking offer and increased foot traffic in the Mall. I could be wrong, but you'd need more direct evidence to statistically satisfy that hypothesis.

From David's notes:
A Questions on Notice was tabled by Cllr Ann Moran asking what progress had been made on her earlier
motion regarding adoption of the Renew Newcastle Model for unoccupied premises in the CBD
Will be very interested to see what happens with this, although Adelaide's cbd isn't quite as derelict as Newcastle's, i'm sure we have a bucketload of unoccupied premises that could be of use to artists and community groups.

+1 for Mono's comment, Councillor, always appreciate the effort to communicate what's happening in the town hall. And I agree also that it's probably not a good idea to compare anything from christmas 2009 against 2008, which was just a couple of months after the most serious financial crisis in generations.

I am one of the 3 speaker’s this eve at Renew Adelaide – The real deal (as compared to a Motion on Notice) is as follows:
The word on the street, and even more so on-line, is a group of enterprising young artists are pushing for night time activation of our inner city. Renew Adelaide is a non-profit, artist run initiative working to transform empty spaces and disused buildings via low cost artist and community run ventures; these city users want liabilities to become opportunities.
The real champions are Brigid Noone and Ianto Ware, backed by a band of volunteers who seem unlikely to give up. This ambitious team believe in a vibrant Adelaide and have set about connecting the arts with council and property owners to create wins for all. Their inspiration was the successful Renew Newcastle project that facilitated short term agreements between property owners and creatives that activated the public realm and bought renewed community energy.
Elements of this movement are often underway in Adelaide, with council sponsoring numerous festivals and cultural events to stimulate public spaces. The real challenge is activating a privately owned built form that lies idle due to rules and regulations that only confuse and intimidate uninitiated; further hindered by Council’s historical risk adverse approach, the easiest way to deal with complex interrelated legislation.
Having seen and experienced the laneways of Melbourne first hand, Adelaide City Councillors and Executive have recently demonstrated a genuine preparedness to rethink and navigate these issues for opportunity creation. Once this code of regulatory conditions is cracked, a suite of quick wins are to be had; artists get edgy venues to exhibit, building owners get cleaned up property and real estate exposure (possibly even increased values over time), the community gets safer streets and more places to play and local businesses can begin to exploit an emerging night-time economy.
I am hopeful success will breed success and that Adelaide as a whole will get just that bit mojo and spread its creativeness into the cracks that provide a healthy breeding ground for ideas and imagination. If sustained, these conditions have a history (indeed a tradition) of resulting in artist led urban renewal. What areas like the west end and our numerous laneways need is sustained reactivation through more permanent exhibition spaces, offices, retail, theatres and coffee shops. Low risk grass roots activities like Renew Adelaide can bring people back into these decaying opportunities for the kind experiences Adelaidians and visitors seek and treasure. There is not much to loose and a great deal of potential!
There is no question Adelaide is well and truly on the cultural map; however innovation and enthusiasm like this add valuable substance to the user experience and enhances Adelaide’s claim as the real deal for artists young and old. The Renew Adelaide Team, with Fringe Director Christy Anthony and myself will, be discussing these themes and more at a Fringe Festival Forum at the Allan Scott Auditorium (UniSA City West) on March 12th, please join us and, if inspired, get involved.

In David's latest notes above The Council voted to accept the last plan for the "Urban Forest" on the former SA Water site. However I've heard scuttlebutt talk this weekend that the site's now being purposed by the Government as a park and ride for the tram extension. Is this just silly rumours or is there any fact to it?
