Wow, this is very nice. Any chance of them extending it all the way to the south?
My work is never finished.

Great photos, thanks Xara.
How the hell are there reinforcements strong enough to let this piece...
...just hang there without support?!

Counterweight on the opposite side helps alot, and the other reason that concrete is strong as f$%k with reinforcement! Impressive site.
[COM] Re: South Rd Upgrades - News & construction ONLY | U/C: Supe
It's actually quite a few smaller pieces that are put together. Maybe that's got something to do with how it's able to just hang there like that.
[COM] Re: South Rd Upgrades - News & construction ONLY | U/C: Supe
The concrete has been aerated with helium.
No, that's bullshit.
No, that's bullshit.
cheers,

Post-tensioned steel does amazing things when put in the right places.

That actually makes it much more difficult! Stress in the top reinforcement is the limiting factor in cantilevered concrete sections, so it would be quite easy if it were continuous, but I don't know how they handle the discontinuities. I think the most likely explanation's that the post tensioning isn't all done at once, and the relative lack of holes at the top is due to tendons running to (not through) the ten segments before it.rev wrote:It's actually quite a few smaller pieces that are put together. Its own weight is much less than that of the load it's designed to carry, but once it's joined up the tension will be at the bottom of the sections.

It's magic, that's why it hangs there like that. Magic.

Pics from Thursday - Angle Rd to Grand Junction Rd

i'm a bit confused by this project. Realise it's for improving freight transport times - all good. But why does it start so far south of GJ road? Simply to avoid the Days Rd intersection lights? Surely a different more cost effective approach could have been used for that intersection, and start the superway 500m further north?
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

And to remove conflicting movements on South Road without restricting right turns.Wayno wrote:i'm a bit confused by this project. Realise it's for improving freight transport times - all good. But why does it start so far south of GJ road? Simply to avoid the Days Rd intersection lights?
What more cost effective approach did you have in mind?Surely a different more cost effective approach could have been used for that intersection, and start the superway 500m further north?

Thanks for the photos Xaragmata. It's really starting to take shape aroung GJR! Looking good!
I would have thought a tunnel would be more financially viable, and safer (removing 18m drop). This project ($842M & 4.8km -2.8km Elevated) is averages $175,000 per metre, obviously costing more in elevated section. So would be safe to say $250,000 per metre in the 2.8k elevated roadway (Which would leave $142M for the southern 2km). Surely a tunnel would not cost this much as a cut-and-cover style project?
