Its not much power, but its a positive step. I wonder why none of this was mentioned earlier.
Think of all the open skylights in shopping centres, this is something they should all consider also.
I wonder what they are worth.
No, we should have more skylights, not solar panel glass. If shopping centres are dark from an absence of natural light, we simply use up more power putting lights in.
But you end up using more power as a result of all that glass heating things up inside, requiring air conditioners to be cranked up.
Wouldn't it make more sense to use even a small amount of solar power, then continue to rely on fossil fuel plants which regardless of how much power your using, spew out pollution day and night?
At least the shopping centers will be able to reduce their carbon footprint or whatever its called.
And there are light bulbs which are more efficient, surely that counts for something...

Media Mikes been a bit quiet lately, I think with the opening of the tramline extension this Sunday he'll have a suprise for us. Probably another extension - either North Adelaide or West End Loop. Something in the air tells me he will.

As promised, I have taken some photos from the 15th floor of City Central Tower 1, and placed them on Flickr. I will post this to the CCT1 thread as well.

Thanks for posting those mate. Certainly a different view of the square to what I am used to. Great photos (especially those taken in the afternoon).

Around 30kWh/day... what a useless waste of money! Can't find anything in a brief Google search about how much power the trams suck down, but it's probably safe to say that you couldn't get one tram to run end-to-end with that much power.

How much do the panels cost? The Solar Shop sells opaque panels of the same size from the same manufacturer for $500 a pop. Let's assume these fancy new things cost the same. At 40 panels per stop that's $100,000 - and not including labour, inverters and grid connections - so say $150K all up. If we continue the generosity and assume we buy electricity for 33.3c/kWh then the panels will generate $10 worth of power per day.

At that rate it will take 40 years to pay for itself, and that's not even taking into consideration depreciation and opportunity cost. Contracting to buy "green" electricity from a generator to run the trams on would have been much more cost effective and "greener".

Despite what I said at the last photo update, I did make another run to the city. Got some photos but not the same size haul as usual. The marque is looking very much more complete with some photos taken also. Photos coming later tonight.

Photo time again. In another post, I have also got some shots of the Beeline simply because today was the last full day of service for the bus version.

Image
New median strip beyond City West stop now filled in.

Image
Rather annoying place for the pedestrian crossing button don't you say?

Image
City West stop looking east. Note the electrical cabinet has now been fitted here and at all other stops en route. Also of note is that the roof beam has also been 'capped off'. City West and Victoria Square stops currently have the caps in although Adelaide Railway Station, Rundle Mall and Pirie Street stops don't have the caps. I can only assume that it is an overnight job.

Image
New pole mounted lighting. These lights are fitted at the pedestrian level crossing end of the platform at all stops.

Image
Image
New seating has now been installed at all stops. The second shot is at Adelaide Railway Station stop by the way.

Image
New 'cladding' has been added to the uprights at the shelter hiding the conduits and other piping.

Image
New (and hopefully temporary being glossed cardboard) timetable information at City West. All stops have these.

Image
Image
City West stop, finally finished.

Image
Paver artwork at Adelaide Railway Station stop finally revealed.

Image
Image
New garden works virtually complete in Victoria Square.

Image
Image
Marquee being assembled for tommorrow's celebrations.

Image
Former plaque of the old Victoria Square terminus infront of the marquee.

Image
Finally, a shot of 103 and 107 passing eachother at south of the current Victoria Square stop.

Beeline photos soon.

Nice work.

How many seconds before those cabinets are covered in posters?

I am a bit disappointed at how basic the shelters are in function. A few pieces of glass, even just parallel to the direction of the road, would at lease provide a wind break.
