About all that's left is an L shaped section containing Woolworths.

The Glenelg Cinema Centre is closing tomorrow, with a screening of "Gone With the Wind", and will be converted to
restaurants, retail and consulting rooms, depending on prospective tenants - the facade will be retained.

A grand shame, that is.

The entire bay junction shopping centre is a construction / demolition site now. The front of Woolworths is literally covered in demolition debris! Obviously they're re-configuring the front of Woolworths so that it will open into the new mall.
They've also demolished Woolworths liquor and the little bit that remained of the old mall.
I think they may be replacing the roof on Woolworths too going by the amount of old roofing that's propped up in front of Woolworths at the moment., but I'm not sure about that.
I think it's a real shame Wallis couldn't have sold the cinemas to Taplin and that way the cinemas could have been incorporated into the new Bay junction shopping centre. That wouldn't necessarily mean demolishing the cinema building, just making it into an integrated part of the centre in a creative way.
If the cinemas are going to be converted into shops anyway, that makes sense to me.

I agree, I think this is where the Council should have stepped in to ensure the cinema stayed stayed in some capacity, weather it was Wallis or someone else?
The old cinemas there were somewhat a Glenelg institution and it is a shame to lose this peace of heritage. Plus I personally saw my first ever cinema movie there as a youngster back in the late 80's!

It appears that this project has been redesigned. Judging by this image from Loucas Zahos architects:
I like it, very sleek.

looks ok, but it's a case of opportunity lost. Being distant from the beachfront this could easily have included an 8-10 storey office/residential tower without nimby resistence.

The NIMBY forces are very powerful in Glenelg. In fact this project was originally proposed at 5 levels, however fierce community and council opposition to such a towering skyscraper forced the height to be reduced to the current 3 levels.

That is a masterpiece of architectural design Wayno, well done!

V impressed with the new sleek look. That end of Glenelg sure needed some work to complement the rest. A pity about the three instead of 5 floors. Wayno, top marks on architectural flair and passion.
I take it that the cinema bldg remains but with changed function. Can't wait to see the new Glenelg entry area when I'm next in Adelaide.

You are exactly right there - I'm well aware of THAT thing. But at least the northern side has picked up considerably.

Any developments on this? Is the cinema building still being kept?
