Recent progress:
The 'tent' has been moved around again and you can just see an excavator working inside. Demolition of the old retaining walls is also underway.

The tent has been moved (perhaps for the last time - it looks like its being dismantled), revealing the excavation work that was taking place underneath. The old retaining walls are being taken apart - they'll probably remove the remaining bits once the crane is gone.

Ok so I was way off with my idea that it's for politicians to hold a media photo shoot :hilarious:

What sort of excavation requires a marquee on top? Surely not contaminated soil?
Perhaps there were Aboriginal remains there? Wasn't the riverbank meant to be some sacred site for them or something? I remember something years ago

Highly likely that it was contaminated soil. A common method of limiting the risk is to dig up the contaminated soil, wrap it in plastic and bury it below a new building. This prevents the contamination from leaking into surrounding soils and building over the top of it prevents it being accidently dug up.

It looks to be they are building a piling platform

It appears that the soil remediation phase has finished. Most of the heaps of dirt have ether been buried or removed and a clean layer of compacted fill has been laid awaiting the next phase of construction . Pictures 20/9/2020.

Seems kind of odd to fill the hole back in when they have to dig right through it again to make the deep concrete basement for the proton therapy equipment

They need a piling rig on site to stabilise the ground around the future basement before they can start excavating the dirt for the basement. A piling rig needs a pretty even and stable surface to work on, hence they've filled the hole in.

Definitely getting closer to the next construction phase. Even with the filling & leveling of the holes that were dug to remove contaminated soil etc, there's still a fairly large drop (about 5m) from the front of the site to the back corner, so there might not be much more re-excavation required. The sub ground areas will be below North Terrace level but still mostly at street level for George St. due to that relative difference in elevation.

They’ve only just finished removing the old train control centre. Excavation for piling for 3 storeys underground for the proton therapy bunker is the next stage, which will take months.

it looks like some some rebar piling cages have appeared on the site (on the right hand side). A curious trench has also been dug around the North Terrace edge and filled with what look like foam blocks which are being cemented in place. A vibration suppression strategy maybe?
