News & Discussion : New Restaurants, Bars & Night Clubs
Re: News & Discussion : New Bars & Night Clubs
Wow this has exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a downgrade from the current West Tce club.
The exterior looks great and will dramatically improve that end of Hindley Street. A larger capacity will attract further acts to Adelaide and boast the local live music scene. While food and bar outlets along Hindley Street will boast day time and weeknight activity, improving safety along that quiet part of Hindley. I also love the simple name change - Q Nightclub.
The only negatives... this could take business away from exisiting venues (namely the Thebby, Gov and AEC Theatre) and lure patrons away from exisiting nightclubs. It could also be worth to reopen the idea of closing that part of Hindley St for vehicles on Saturday night again.
In the end, this will squash any sadness felt towards HQ being demolished next year.

Hindley street has so much going for it these days :
1) This new Q Superclub
2) New cinemas opening in a couple of months
3) The new Holiday Inn Hotel opening next year
4) Proximity to the Biomedical Precinct
5) Proximity to Adelaide oval
6) More residents in the area as a result of West Franklin, Sofitel Hotel, Central Adelaide, etc
I think even on weeknights Hindley street could become quite busy.
As to the idea of closing off Hindley street to vehicles, I don't think it would work. How would they work
it with all the taxis ? It would be chaos on Morphett street.

The stone faced building and the teal building on the far left.Alyx wrote:So, it is these two buildings which make way for it?

It's a massive site.

I guess we can look forward to all of these venues sharpening their offering to ensure they remain relevant.crawf wrote: The only negatives... this could take business away from exisiting venues (namely the Thebby, Gov and AEC Theatre) and lure patrons away from exisiting nightclubs. 'Q' is not the kind of place I'd go, but the development looks great and will be a plus for this part of the street.

Great to see HQ moving to Hindley street, but i thought the days of hiding heritage stone facades behind tacky aluminium hoardings were gone. I realise a daggy old stone façade may not be the look for a modern club, but still it seems a shame.mshagg wrote:I guess we can look forward to all of these venues sharpening their offering to ensure they remain relevant.'Q' is not the kind of place I'd go, but the development looks great and will be a plus for this part of the street.

Absolutely agree. It's a lesson that seems to never sink in on Hindley St.claybro wrote:Great to see HQ moving to Hindley street, but i thought the days of hiding heritage stone facades behind tacky aluminium hoardings were gone. So the existing buildings are heritage and being retained? That's something of a comfort having assumed they were to be demolished.

Hotel Wright St will be closing by the end of the year, having sold to Chinese investors who are turning it into offices.
After 160 years, Adelaide’s heritage-listed Hotel Wright St set to close doors

AFTER more than 160 years, a name change and a bevy of different owners, a popular Wright St hotel is calling last drinks.
Hotel Wright St — which was among the first Adelaide pubs to embrace the use of recycled materials and quirky ornaments now typical of decor in the CBD’s small bar scene — will shut its doors before Christmas.
Proprietors Katie and Mike Pettigrew and Scott and Jason Lawrie sold their lease on 88 Wright St to a group of Chinese investors, who bought the building for $5.5 million.
It is understood the group, Wright Developments SA Pty Ltd, plans to develop the site into offices and commercial space.
Mr Pettigrew was planning a “complete renovation” of Hotel Wright St — including moving the front bar and building a bottle shop — before it received the investor’s offer.
“It took us some time to come to an agreement to sell it because we were pretty emotionally attached,” Mr Pettigrew said.
The group has since bought the old Fountain Inn and has started work to renovate and rebrand the Glen Osmond Rd pub as the Parkside Hotel.
The local heritage-listed hotel on Wright St opened in 1852. It was known as the Queens Arms until 2011, when the Pettigrews and Lawries took control and renamed it Hotel Wright St.
The group transformed the pub’s outdoor dining area, including using recycled timber for tables and chairs.
“That recycled theme, no one else look liked it in Adelaide … but in Sydney and Melbourne it was everywhere,” Mrs Pettigrew said.
“And we did not have a massive budget, so it was very doable for us.”
Re: News & Discussion : New Bars & Night Clubs
I went to the Wright St Hotel a couple of years ago and it was one of the worst pub meals I have ever had. Waited over an hour, overpriced and overcooked.
This was a while back now so not if it was just one unlucky bad night.

They were never that bad when I used to frequent it, though that again was a couple years ago. It's a shame really given it would have become the local for all the residents incoming to the area with development over the next few years.

I was only there for Mother's Day back in March and would go in for the occasional drink. Feeling sad and angry about this as it was such a nice place.

Always sad when a heritage pub closes. Another one lost...
Not my favorite pub but perfectly good place for a couple of pints after work and always seems busy.
