Adelaide needs to get a grip we live in the CBD and on Sunday decided t take a lunchtime stroll t get something to eat Leigh St everything closed, that's ok let's go to HDCB Hindley Street closed Righto I know Peel Street hmmmm closed there is a pattern forming ended up at the Coopers Alehouse .... I will give Leigh St some credit there were 3 very lonely food vans. As a resident I get bombarded with vibrant, vibrancy and every derivative there of however there is a resounding closed, shut back on Monday attitude. We would have expected a little more of an open attitude especially with a mid afternoon football game which answered an earlier observation of people walking in circles and they were doing this as they had nowhere to go .... not allowed to blame that apparently. :secret:

Penalty rate "myth" Hospitality workers get 150% of the base rate which starts at about $18 - everyday of the year, so $27 an hour whenever - the change to penalty rates which other industries have comes in on 1st Jan 2015 (United voice did an article recently on this) - The 150% is a Saturday pay rate - So penalty rates are 125% mon-fri - 150% Sat - 175% Sun and 275% Public holidays (Bombay Bicycle club had a rant over this) - there's few public holidays but someone who works will earns an extra $22.5 an hour ($49.5) under the penalty rates scheme - but they make $4.5 an hour less on a weekday. These are casual rates - under the penalty rates many workers are worse off. The boss saves $4.5 and hour monday - friday but has to pay $4.5 more on sundays - So why are they bitching? there's not many public holidays - Over 2/3 of the time Mr Boss pays his employers less - 1/7 is the same and the rest is more -majority of the time 1/7 its $4.5 and p/holidays $22.5.

The businesses David mentioned aren't bitching, they just aren't opening because they've done their sums and concluded that they won't make enough money to justify opening.

Exactly, and why would they? I live a few streets away from Leigh St and the whole CBD is a very sleepy affair on a Sunday (outside of Rundle St/Mall of course, where people can drive in from the burbs, pay tuppence for a few hours parking and never have to set foot in another street). You're not going to get vibrancy on a Sunday lunchtime without more permanent residents IMO.

Wouldnt have had too hard a time finding a nice spot for a bite in North Adelaie, which im guessing represents a decent chunk of where Adelaide's ~22,000 population resides.

Yep, and same over on Hutt St. Quite a few places open. One new place is Coffylososophy - a cafe near the corner of Halifax & Hutt. Excellent excellent food & coffee at reasonable prices. Open early & late too...
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Cane Corner is closed. The gouger/morphett corner shop is vacant with a 'For Lease' sign in place. Apologies if mentioned previously, I walked past Friday night on my way to British India (which is a fab restaurant).

Fingers crossed a worthy business takes the lease. A classy restaurant please!!! and renovations to include many many bi-fold doors so the whole corner appears to flow...

Finally. How long were they "closing down" for? A year? More? No doubt they'll be like other local furniture/home furnishing stores and continue to randomly pop up at various locations like a discount Hydra.

The point I was making though is some small businesses can't afford to employ staff, especially not to work weekend shifts at penalty rates. They therefore have two choices: work themselves, or close and have a day off.

I checked the other Salad Choice on Grenfell St and I was right.
Yet another business utterly failed!

Both lunch places in that building failed at about the same time - they never reopened after the Christmas break.
