Re: News & Discussion: Trams
The traffic light priority thing is really bad at Greenhill Rd. If a tram misses the sequence by 5 seconds, its a 2 minute+ wait to go through.
In the city, its often just as fast to get out at Victoria Square and walk up to the mall, such is the crawl of the trams.

Has that been announced? The last I saw was in the press release which stated early works were to start by end of 2016.PeFe wrote:The North Tce extension is due to start mid-year

Maybe the timeline has been pushed back.....originally it was going to be a mid-year start.
I am wondering whether the SA government is waiting for the O-bahn tunnel to be completed so buses do not need to use North Terrace.

Re: News & Discussion: Trams
There was some "early work" earlier in the year where they did some services investigation (checking for wires, pipes, etc.). I think it has gone to tender already, which has been awarded to the same people as the Jerry Road works from memory. Major work should start in May or June.

Re: News & Discussion: Trams
I think the govt for a relatively minor outlay should 1) Extend the tram from Festival theatre to Adelaide Oval. It would get rid of a lot of buses on footy, cricket days. and 2) Extend North Tce tram to at least East Tce where the fringe is 3) Extend the entertainment centre tram down Port Rd to opp. Hindmarsh stadium. My guess is to extend all 3 would be only $50m esp as routes 1&2 are commencing soon.
Re: News & Discussion: Trams
How would extending the tram to Adelaide Oval reduce the amount of buses on match days? They come from all over the city.

Re: News & Discussion: Trams
Yes you are right Norman. I guess I was naive to think our train & tram network would be developed enough to replace most buses. However if the tram network was fully developed as proposed (Eastlink,Westlink etc), do you think this could happen? Or would there still be too many "black spots"? If so, which areas?
Re: News & Discussion: Trams
If you want to get rid of a lot of busses you will need to add more trams to the network which will increase the cost a lot.
I'm all in favour of expanding the tram network, but I dislike seeing the stubby little tram leg down to Festival Theatre criticised because it's actually a great piece of future investment.

Re: News & Discussion: Trams
Is there a reason why the track relay in Jetty Road is being done using grooved tram rail, rather than standard tee head rail? I would have thought support for Whyalla would have been a no-brainer? Grooved rail is obviously unnecessary on straight track, as the existing track has proven..
Serious question, rather than a snark. For all I know, Arrium might not be taking on new orders.
Similarly, does anyone know why the track is being replaced? It's not all that worn, and the ride seems ok at the speeds usual on Jetty Road.

Re: News & Discussion: Trams
The current track was laid in the 1980s. The new form of the track itself might be because of the rubber inserts that will be put into the rails for the cyclists.

I presume you are talking about this -https://www.tenders.sa.gov.au/tenders/c ... o?id=12032Norman wrote:There was some "early work" earlier in the year where they did some services investigation (checking for wires, pipes, etc.). The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.
Re: News & Discussion: Trams
That seems too much like logic for the govt and the PS;)PeFe wrote:Maybe the timeline has been pushed back.....originally it was going to be a mid-year start.

Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.
