ADELAIDE-BASED student accommodation company Student Living has teamed up with a Melbourne developer to build a $37 million, 222-apartment student accommodation block at the western end of Waymouth St.
Melbourne-based developer Mattioli Group has acquired the ANZ Office Furniture site at 304 Waymouth St, and construction on the eight-story building has begun.
The "ipad" development will contain only one-bedroom apartments designed specifically to appeal to the 30,000 international students expected to be studying in Adelaide in 2010.
The group has priced the units at about $170,000 to appeal to small or entry-level investors, giving the development its $37.7 million price tag.
Student Living Australia director Ian Doolette said it was a relief to get the project underway.
"We have been working with this developer on this project for 18 months," he said.
"One major issue was planning.
"We have made a lot of changes over the past 12 months and that has been helped a lot by Education Adelaide. If Adelaide wants to be an education city, you have got to produce appropriate designs."
Education Adelaide chief executive Ms Denise von Wald said projects planned for Adelaide should be able to meet the "conservative" estimate of 30,000 international students studying here in 2010.
"We predict that by the end of 2007, 23,500 international students will have studied in Adelaide," she said.

Don't have the plans available anymore so I can't say if there were any changes. Your model looks pretty spot on to the artist's impression. Good work.Howie wrote:Might be, this was the original DA put to the council. I'm not sure if it's been updated since.
Pretty good website, very informative. However my only criticism is that the photos they have used of Adelaide which appear in the background are from the early 1990's. In fact in one, you can see 'State Bank' still on the Westpac Tower :wank:Pistol78 wrote:Website now available:
