It's funny you say you think Marion will be the only one left. I despise that place - its a haven for underaged youths to "hump" in the back seats and bitch endlessly like a bunch of irresponsible and disrespective pricks.

I don't agree with them not standing a chance. I'm sure another cinema complex will pop up in the city - hopefully as a part of a new building! The new approach to cinemas (as recently seen with Wallis at Mitcham Square) is to have lots of small cinema rooms polaying different movies so there's plenty of variety on offer.

The point here is why drive into the city, pay for parking, and watch a movie in a run down cinema on hindley st when there are many suburban cinemas with free parking much closer to home...

There was talk of a cinema to be included in the Renaissance Arcade development

Probably true, though Marion Megaplex is by far the best cinema complex in SA or even Australia. Mostly for its huge choice of movies

Maybe the new Harris Scarfe building would be a good place for a new cinema?

as for cinemas being 'on the way out'.. i had thought so for a while myself, which is why i was so surprised there was a whole new Wallis cinema complex in Mitcham.. and it was actually busy

most of adelaide's major cinemas seem to be popular, at least for now

I disagree. Cinemas went out when videos came in, then people realised that seeing a video was not the same as seeing a movie on the big screen, and the next thing we found megaplexes popping up in the suburbs. The idea of going to the city to see a movie is on its way out, but that will change too as the residential population of the CBD grows, and they want a local cinema complex because they don't have cars to get out to the suburban megaplexes.

I think Hutt St and Gouger St would be good venues for a new cinema complex. The Movie-Meal thing seems to be very popular, even out in the suburbs. Rundle St already has the Palace and Nova cinemas, but maybe a more mainstream movie house would do well there too.

Of course, there is also the Mercury that everyone seems to have forgotten to mention. Not mainstream, I know (not the movies or the location), but it's in the CBD.

I have just come back from melbourne and the first thing i thought of when i started reading this was "melbourne central" then i noticed that the wallis guy suggested the same thing.

It is a very popular setup they have there, great location etc. I really could see a cinema complex in rundle mall taking off if done right

Well Melbourne Central has an underground train station. Can we have that too?

We already have an underground train station, when you walk in you either have to go down a steep ramp, a lift or several flights of stairs.

Every time I think of the Hoyts Regent Cinema a tear wells up in my eye. What a grand place that was. Does anyone know if it's still intact the way it used to be following the redevelopment of the arcade? I will cry with tears of joy if it is ever reopened.

Back to the topic, wasn't the Porno Pastor in the news of late a member of this Edge Church? Pity he was found out. He would've LOVED this loaction on Hindley St. Maybe he himself selected it so he could sneak out on saturday nights for some post-preach stimulation

In the Rundle Place thread I mentioned that it would be awesome if they re-opened this as a possible live music venue or something like that. Sydney and Melbourne seem to have lots of awesome theatre type venues that we don't have. Why not do something like that with this to give Her Magesty's a bit of competition (that is if it's still in it's old form)

As I mentioned in the other thread ... somewhere on here... if you look up as you walk into the refurbished arcade you can see the old cinema ceiling above you. The new second level shops are the old cinema. There's even the pigeon holes that the projectors used to stick out f up on the front wall.

Aww so it has been destroyed. What a shame . Atleast they've kept some of the architectural elements.
