What do you mean by "sustain"? There's already no shortage of tennants for the street, and the majority of them trade on foot traffic.

A mall stretching from West Terrace to Pulteny Street would be a big ask to be fully dependant only on foot traffic. I just believe taking away cars would hinder business (and i can hear people whinging already their taxi can't drop them off in front of the door they wish to enter)

How is it any different from 'sustaining' what's already there? I think you overestimate the importance of the passing car traffic. Indeed, one might argue that such traffic discourages pedestrian activity, which is what 'sustains' businesses after all.

I can see a case for pedestrianising Hindley between King William and Morphett. That's only about 600m on top of about 500m for Rundle Mall. Stockholm 'sustains' Drottninggatan, which is around about a 3 km north-south pedestrian street (albeit with the occasional east-west traffic break).

Definitely do not support the move of making Hindley Street a permanent pedestrian mall.

Much of Hindley Street is dead during the day, so there isn't any demand for it becoming a mall.

I think an interesting option would be a shared mall. Like the one in Salisbury. one way traffic shared with people.
Have it open to all traffic during the day then Fri/Sat nights close it to just Taxi's.

I've always believed HIndley Street can make it as a mall, and this will be a good trial to prove so. The stretch between Morphett and KWS has enough character and foot traffic to promote itself into a retail/nighclub destination and on a safety notice would be greatly advantageous.

What was Rundle Street like before it became a mall, surely there were less businesses operating on a per capita ratio than now?

I remember back in Year 10, watching a documentary for geography about a city council's plan in Brazil to transform the city's main street into a pedestrain mall, and despite the massive opposition, it went ahead and now business and trade is up like 2-3 hundred percent than it was before because of the increased foot traffic and convinience. With Rundle Mall's success and the emergence of HIndley Street's popularity by night, I definetly believe the case is viable.

I go through Rundle Mall most days, and judging by the amount of people passing through - I'd consider it well patronised, and therefore successful.

News to us. Rundle mall is still the most expensive strip of real estate in the state.

I believe its a commercial newspaper, radio and TV thing to have stories on the decline of Rundle Mall, and how Westfields are simply the best in the world. They will interview an old fart saying "why would you ever want to go into the city, and pay for parking when you can simply drive up to the Westfield for free". Just before christmas, the TV news will always do a live cross to Westfield Marion to check on the crowds and xmas sales. I always wonder if Westfield sponsor this? hmmm

However in reality Rundle Mall is so dominant that the Westfields will never get close to its vitality, atmosphere, culture, number of shops, variety and other entertainment venues. I believe Rundle Mall is the most successful CBD mall for retail sales in the country (despite what the bananas say about their Brisbane Mall). I enjoy the openness of Rundle Mall over the monotonous claustrophobia of suburban shopping centres. I live much closer to Marion than I do to the CBD, but I'd sooner go into town for purchases - open skies and breathing space are particularly appealing. That said, I could readily understand how anyone looking to buy a decent amount of items would prefer to drive up to the front door of a shopping centre and load up.

If, however, shopping centres reverted back to their brilliance of the '60s, I might have to make more regular trips. Giant fountains, glass sculptures, neon lights, marble floors, wide malls and the like - excellent!

Oh. Yes. Hindley. Erm. Quite.
