SA POLICE GET STATE OF THE ART HEADQUARTERS
State Cabinet has given the green light for a brand new $38 million headquarters for South Australia’s
Police department to be built in the City Centre.
“This will be a building that boasts a five-star energy rating, which will cater for the ever increasing
demands of sophisticated policing operations.
“We make no apology for delivering the resources our record numbers of police need to do their
job.”
Premier Mike Rann said the project presented an exciting opportunity for developers to be involved
in the construction of the facility for the State’s officers.
The new precinct will be built near the Victoria Square legal precinct with a shopfront in Wakefield
Street to continue operating.
The Premier said the project recognises the important role that every officer plays in keeping this
State safe.
“According to the most recent SAPOL statistics crime in the state has recorded the biggest fall in
more than a decade and we’ve recruited an extra 400 officers since coming to office, bringing the
total number of officers on the beat to well over 4000,” the Premier said.
“We want to continue achieving such stellar results which is why we’ve delivered on opening so
many stations under this Government including, Golden Grove, Aldinga, Gawler, Mount Barker,
Victor Harbor, Berri, Port Lincoln, Newton, Blakeview and Pooraka.”
In the 2008-09 State Budget, we announced more than $38 million for SAPOL to build a new
headquarters. That included $1.3 million in 2011-12 for increased rent and $18.5 million in 2010-11
and $20.2 million in 2011-12 for the cost of fit-out.
The Budget also provides a further $5.7 million to be spent on new CCTV systems to be installed in
metropolitan and regional police stations to enhance their management of prisoners being held at the
stations.
“Increased funding for the SAPOL operational budget and the extensive capital spending have
ensured that police in this State are better able to keep our communities safe,”
“New police stations across South Australia, supported by a record level of funding for SAPOL and
the highest ever numbers of police officers in the State’s history, are all concrete evidence of this
Government’s support for ensuring the safety and security of the community,” Minister Wright said.
The tender process will proceed into November 2008, with a view to entering into a contract in early
in 2009, with completion of the new headquarters expected by 2012.
