I have heard that at some stage today the Premier will be announcing that the Police HQ is going ahead on this site!
Why not the Wave building on Currie Street ? Just a couple of government departments and it would help tremendously with pre-commitment.

Oh well, another sub 14 level building it is then.. waa waa waaaaa

Sounds interesting. If it is a 20 level building I will be happy, anything less is same old same old I suppose.

A government tenant commitment is very positive but then the proposal will actually have to get approval so it will be a while off yet.

From the Advertiser:
$38m police station for city

October 29, 2008 08:40am

A NEW $38 million headquarters for South Australia's police has been approved by state cabinet.

Tenders are proceeding for the headquarters, to be located near the Victoria Square legal precinct, Premier Mike Rann says.

The headquarters, to be completed by 2012, would have a five-star energy rating and cater for increasingly sophisticated police operations, he said.

Premier Mike Rann
Minister for Economic Development
Minister for Social Inclusion
Minister for the Arts
Minister for Sustainability and Climate Change
Wednesday 29 October 2008
SA POLICE GET STATE OF THE ART HEADQUARTERS
State Cabinet has given the green light for a brand new $38 million headquarters for South Australia’s
Police department to be built in the City Centre.
“This will be a building that boasts a five-star energy rating, which will cater for the ever increasing
demands of sophisticated policing operations.
“We make no apology for delivering the resources our record numbers of police need to do their
job.”
Premier Mike Rann said the project presented an exciting opportunity for developers to be involved
in the construction of the facility for the State’s officers.
The new precinct will be built near the Victoria Square legal precinct with a shopfront in Wakefield
Street to continue operating.
The Premier said the project recognises the important role that every officer plays in keeping this
State safe.
“According to the most recent SAPOL statistics crime in the state has recorded the biggest fall in
more than a decade and we’ve recruited an extra 400 officers since coming to office, bringing the
total number of officers on the beat to well over 4000,” the Premier said.
“We want to continue achieving such stellar results which is why we’ve delivered on opening so
many stations under this Government including, Golden Grove, Aldinga, Gawler, Mount Barker,
Victor Harbor, Berri, Port Lincoln, Newton, Blakeview and Pooraka.”
In the 2008-09 State Budget, we announced more than $38 million for SAPOL to build a new
headquarters. That included $1.3 million in 2011-12 for increased rent and $18.5 million in 2010-11
and $20.2 million in 2011-12 for the cost of fit-out.
The Budget also provides a further $5.7 million to be spent on new CCTV systems to be installed in
metropolitan and regional police stations to enhance their management of prisoners being held at the
stations.
“Increased funding for the SAPOL operational budget and the extensive capital spending have
ensured that police in this State are better able to keep our communities safe,”
“New police stations across South Australia, supported by a record level of funding for SAPOL and
the highest ever numbers of police officers in the State’s history, are all concrete evidence of this
Government’s support for ensuring the safety and security of the community,” Minister Wright said.
The tender process will proceed into November 2008, with a view to entering into a contract in early
in 2009, with completion of the new headquarters expected by 2012.

I wish they would stop mentioning the $38 million price tag. The building will probably cost in excess of $100 million to build. The $38 million figure is the cost to the government.

Not much extra detail though apart from confirming it will be built near Victoria Square and the the tender/contract details are close to being finalised.

Could City Central Tower 8 be a possibility for new SAPOL HQ?

Wasn't the government only a few weeks ago stating that the new police HQ would be in 'City West'? Although I personally find this Wakefield Street location more logical for the police HQ, I wonder how such mixed messages have contributed to some of the office developments proposed for the City West region; for example the Urban Construct tower at Franklin Street?

Architects are Hassel same as VS1 (SA Water)
Type: Development Application Received
Application Number: DA/1055/2008
Lodgement Date: 23/12/2008
Location :37-45 Wakefield Street, ADELAIDE SA 5000

9 stories! If that is for the new Police Headquaters that is very very sad. Would be a huge missed opportunity.

I wonder if we will ever see some serious height in Adelaide.

The current Police HQ is a 12 level building at the corner of Flinders Street and Gawler Place.

What did you expect for 38million. If it was going to be 20 levels it would need to be at least double that, otherwise you would end up with something like the telstra exchange building.

The $38 million is the cost of fit out. SA Police are not building the building the Catholic Church are as it is their land.
