I can only just remember the old trams - quite a comprehensive system. Ripped up by 1958 just like everywhere else. (Here in Brisbane I believe by early 1960's). All this occurred on the back of the concept of the 'road/car is king' and that trams cause bottlenecks, are unsafe and uneconomical.
Now people all over the western world are discovering this folly as the roads jam up, even with more expressways. Plans have been put in Brisbane for the re- introduction of trams, as there has been in Sydney and in Adelaide. Strange, all this; and after the collectiive wisdom of intelligent researchers and transport gurus of the 1950's as well!
I often pick up rail development magazines and lo and behold! - extensive and frequent advertising from tram/light rail manufacturers occurs - and on a world level - people are seeing the light with tram systems. Hope Adelaide sees trams again - they have proven their worth economically and functionally in many places now.
I often wonder just how much short sighted 'flavour of the month'thinking prevails in what is done. (In conjunction with voter power). May be too cynical here!?!

Adelaide Flexity tearing the streets in Melbourne
I thought it would be worth noting that Melbourne tramway operator Yarra Trams has one of our Flexities (newly delivered 111) running around the Melbourne network in AdelaideMetro livery under evaluation. Rumour is that they are going to make an order for 100 trams later on this year and they are doing some design evaluations (they already have a 4 section Combino from Lisbon over as well).
There is going to be a big advantage if the Flexity is chosen. Bombardier who make the Flexities have a plant set up in Melbourne so if our design is chosen, we will not have to import the trams from overseas. That will mean a dramatic reduction in cost also. Ony the first 4 trams (101-104) were actually landed at Outer Harbour and the rest of the fleet have been coming here via Melbourne. In the mean time, 111 is going to be running around the streets of Melbourne for a few months.
