The big changes will be at ground level with some key empty spaces filled and an increase in active street frontages. While the skyline will not be dramatically altered (from this angle at least) the city will be more vibrant particularly in the normally quiet southern end and Hindmarsh Sq will be greatly improved.

Updated list. Now have 23 under construction by end of FY07/08.

A few scheduled to commence next month.

Given all the construction going on at the moment, the expectation of plenty more to come and the apparent collective fascination of S-A members with cranes, I thought we should keep a running tally (which might also save any future arguments about how many cranes were erected during "the construction boom of 2008").

So, here's my attempt (with my best guess as to the order in which they went up)...

1. SA Water (242-260 Victoria Square)
2. Thomson Playford (9 Gouger Street)
3. Lot 8 (16-20 Coglin Street)
4. Octagon Apartments (88-90 Hindley Street)
5. iPad (302-306 Waymouth Street)
6. Conservatory on Hindmarsh (41 Hindmarsh Square)
7. The Precinct (191-199 Morphett Street)

Please feel free to add/remove as appropriate over the coming weeks and months.

Any guesses as to what maximum we will reach???

Good Job...

In the thread 2008 construction there is a list of all developments that are anticipated to commence this year. I would think we will hit the twenties in the later part of the year.

i love it when S-A members go to the trouble of compiling "executive summaries" like this one - good job!

Top work.... perhaps we can create a crane counter on the front page based on your thread if this is popular.

Excellent idea Maximus. Cranes on the skyline give an immediate perception of the economic health of a city. I get excited about the increasing number in Adelaide. As I have said before, in the 1980's the greatest number ever on the skyline was 8 - and that was a boom. Much better now :D :D :D :D :D

Thanks for the feedback, team. Much appreciated. :D

Howie -- if you think front page is justified, then it would be an honour.

What do we think will be the next crane up? 374-400 KWS??

Excellent point skyliner .. Cranes are Good .. its was awful to see heaps of cranes in other citys couple years back when we had none .. certainly has a good positive/proactive feel in the city, and I believe this subtley rubs off on people either living here or visiting .. the way I look at it is if something is getting built (ie. use of cranes) that means jobs!!!! .. from your blue collar worker right through to your white collar worker, so this can only be good .. jobs means money!!!
.. 7 Cranes .. not a bad effort thus far.

Which is why IMO it should be on the front page - like a snapshot of the condition of the city.

400 KWS next :?: :?: :?:

i'd prefer a compound counter on the frontpage indicating recently completed and future activity. Something like:
  • * No Buildings Complete (last 12months): 99
    * No. Buildings U/C: 99
    * No. Cranes on skyline: 99
    * No. Buildings Approved: 99
    * No. Buildings Proposed: 99

That shouldn't be too difficult to do, all the data is already there with the exception of the cranes.
http://buildinglist.photoadelaide.com/
There's a total down the bottom, for example, if you have it to show only approved buildings, there's 22. Set it to approved high-rises, and there's 13. :)

Although, if we were to use it for that, I'd like to go though and split up all the 'twin tower' like projects, such as 20 Hindmarsh Sq or 104 North Tce.

Tried to get as many cranes as possible in this shot today. Missing iPad, and the 2 Coglin cranes though.

UrbanSG, maybe on your next excursion around town just take a snap of all the cranes and do a collage. It doesn't matter if you can't see them all from one angle. What do you think?
