Dramatic $50m city hotel approved
DANIEL WILLS, LOCAL GOVERNMENT REPORTER

A $50 MILLION, 20-storey hotel that will dramatically change Adelaide's skyline has been given the green light.

Adelaide City Council last night approved development of the $50 million Magestic Vertical Garden Hotel on Hindley St despite staunch opposition from owners of near-by opposition hotels the Holiday Inn and Grosvenor.
The new 283-room development will require the demolition of several existing buildings.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison said it would be a major boost to the Adelaide's hotel sector.

"This is a huge step forward for the hotel sector and the West End and could really help to transform Hindley St into one of the city's most popular accommodation spots," he said.

"It's great to see city development of this scale which will help to draw thousands of people to stay in the West End and provide a significant financial boost to many local businesses.

"Importantly, the development has a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, which we welcome."

In a submission to the council's Development Assessment Panel, the Holiday Inn's Kwan Tan said the new development would "make Hindley St unsafe" and his hotel would lose business during the construction period.

Representatives of the Grosvenor Hotel also objected to the development, claiming the 80m development was more than 27m over the allowable height.

Magestic Vertical Garden Hotel developer Culshaw Group has designed other major Adelaide hotels including the Majestic Roof Garden Hotel on Frome St and the Majestic Minima Hotel in Melbourne St.

Developer John Culshaw said his latest development could be the start of Hindley St's "regeneration".

"It will be a hotel which utilises the latest technology in environmental sustainability," he said.

Its green credentials include water recycling, solar panels and a terrace garden.

The plans were lodged with the council prior to regulatory changes requiring all developments over $10 million be ruled on by the State Government's Development Assessment Commission.

Woot! City's... 6th tallest?
Really looking forward to this one. It's design will set a new benchmark for architecture in Adelaide.

Our skyline is changing constantly. If you still think it's boring, you are a very hard person to please. Or do you want everything knocked down and a new city in it's place tomorrow?

When I spotted this proposal, I *really* hoped it would be made. It truly is an awesomesauce building, and I'd love to see it on the skyline. All these new projects bode well for the city :)

I understand what you are getting at - in B'bane 30% of all projects now on hold/cancelled - including the Empire State bldg. (all about finance). Housing industry 25% drop.
