What's so heterosexual about a vagina?
But seriously, everyone I've asked have said the same thing - looks like vaginas.
What the heck are they meant to be?
I'd say that the footpath upgrade is about one third complete. Wish they'd finish so I can get some sleep during the week, they are making a lot of construction noise up to 2am most nights. Jackhammers, compactors, angle grinders... *twitch*

perhaps the 'vaginas' are place holders for lights?
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.

I don't think so, they are very much sculptural. They look like they are finished. Just cant work out what they are supposed to be.

Rundle Street East Sculptural Arbor – Groundplay pty ltd
...
In keeping with the aspirations of the Rundle St Master plan our design is intended to activate the public space in its vicinity by appearing to almost “flow” over a pedestrians head as this section of Rundle St is traversed. The rhythm of the work is reminiscent of the ebbs and flows and the patters of pedestrian movement at the nearby busy Pulteney St walk crossing. The individually cast detailed elements suspended from the curving steel forms underneath the verandah canopy reference the exquisite detail of the fantastically crafted facades of much of the Rundle St architecture.

They don't even come close to referencing that detail let alone replicating it. They're messy, and look like out of context vaginas

Maybe the context is that the project is seriously fucked?
I really don't have a problem with vaginas hanging in the street ...

Come come, chaps - Dali-esque drooping vaginas are far more whimsical than all that tosh. Next step - penises dangling from Centrepoint across the road, and a name change to Foreplay. Do it now.
