I really really wish the Government would see that this a PRIME city area that deserves a thriving entertainment/residential or sporting hub then a hospital.
As everybody keeps saying (including me), the Royal Adelaide Hospital should be redeveloped or a new hospital built at the Clipsal site.
Rann's way of making the backflip look more credible.
In light of the US elections, I would like to refer to this as a 'flip-flop'

Essentially a rebuilt RAH would be a new hospital.

Not necessarily. Depends how it's done. Did you know that there's a parcel of land being redeveloped right as we speak at the moment on the RAH site?

No i didn't, But delevoping on virgin land as compared to closing down existing wings for redevelopment is completely different.

That's what I mean, wing's will not have to be 'closed'. There are parts of the hospital which are not essential to core activities.

Feedback wanted on city hospital rezoning
October 2, 2008
Minister for Urban Development and Planning Paul Holloway today published the proposed rezoning of the Adelaide rail yards site to accommodate the new Marjorie Jackson Nelson Hospital.
“The construction of the hospital and proposed rezoning of this part of the City will make an enormous contribution to the continued rejuvenation of Adelaide’s West End,” Mr Holloway says.
“Rezoning the rail yards site for the state-of-the-art Marjorie Jackson Nelson Hospital also opens opportunities for other developments in this often overlooked part of the city.
“Additional open space created by the proposed rezoning and remediation of the rail yards will also allow this part of the city to better connect with the River Torrens and West Parklands.”
Mr Holloway says the planned rezoning addresses issues such as the design of the hospital, its effect on rail services, and the way it connects with adjoining areas such as UniSA campus, the Parklands, the River Torrens Linear Park and Adelaide’s West End.
The publication of the proposed Ministerial Development Plan Amendment to the City of Adelaide Development Plan kicks off an extensive eight-week consultation process conducted by the Development Policy Advisory Committee that includes a public meeting near the hospital site.
Public submissions will be received until 27 November 2008 with a public meeting held at the Mercure Grosvenor Hotel’s Glenroy Room at 175 North Terrace at 7 pm on 16 December 2008.
Mr Holloway says the Ministerial DPA process that leads to the rezoning will ensure the Adelaide City Council’s planning policies for this area are consistent with the construction of a new hospital.
A Development Plan contains the zones, maps and explicit rules that guide what can and cannot be done in the future with any piece of land within the area it covers.
These zones, maps and policies provide the detailed criteria against which all development applications for the area are assessed.
Mr Holloway says once the rezoning is concluded, a change in land ownership from the Minister for Transport to the Minister for Health, and a report to be submitted under the Parklands Act will be necessary before the construction of the hospital can proceed.
Copies of the Ministerial DPA are available at Planning SA, Level 5, 136 North Terrace, Adelaide and online at

So despite all the raving about this hospital being scrapped, which I only ever saw on these forums, the hospital is still very much going ahead. Good to hear. This will be great for Adelaide.

Not sure if this has been posted before. Plans the ACC have for the area between the torrens and the rail line west of Morphett St bridge.

To play the devils advocate I think its pretty good, should incorporate well with the new hospital. Will be interesting to see what they do with the area near North Tce, will make or break the area. One way or another its gonna be bye-bye to the shitty railyard

For something relatively simple, its effective. A good integration of nature and human activity with the playspaces, viewing platforms and walking activities. If the hospitial does proceed (amisdt all the speculation) I think the masterplans of the two areas work well in sync with the other.
I just hope that they actually put effort into this though, with immaculately landscaped and well maintained surroundings to enhance its image as a more user-friendly place. That's the problem with the most of the Adelaide Parklands, they're all the works of Mother Nature's fury when they should be utilised for ourselves.
