It is envisaged in the area immediately adjacent to Pt Wakefield Road alone there will be an additional 30000 residents in the next 20 odd years in soon to be constructed new suburbs. None of these suburbs will be connected to a rail corridor......
We often dis the state government for not planning ahead with infrastructure, but I think in this area, they are doing the right thing for the future.
1950's style planning....suburbs in the middle of nowhere connected to new freeways. Where is the public transport element to the plans?
It's 2013, not 1953, no excuse for this lack of foresight given we can learn from the mistakes of other poor, car dependent, job deficient northern suburbs.

The original plan for the northern connector included a rail line down the middle of it, like one of the freeways in Perth. I think it may have been for freight though?
I think that was later dropped. Although I don't think there is a final plan for the northern connector yet?
I think it's likely there will be a commuter rail line to these new areas. I'm sure they could spurn a line off from Dry Creek.
I'd put my money on something like that happening, before a toll road.

When DPTI examined widening Port Wakefield Road they found it would be much more expensive than first thought. And nor would it provide exactly the same capacity, firstly because even grade separated junctions reduce capacity compared with no junctions, and secondly because all the Northern Connector capacity would be additional to Port Wakefield Road capacity rather than replacing it.

Was never plans for public transport in the mix. Only freight, final detailing now shows the freight will run to the West of the connector. So, if they do end up building new suburbs out there they could look into a rail network down the middle, but I think that would be many, many years off even consideration; we need an electrified line first and foremost.

Agree PeFe. A rail line to this area should be part of the development. But the rail would not negate the need for the Northern Connector to speed up freight and due to the reasons Aidan has listed for not further upgrading Pt Wakefield Road. Perhaps the best hope is for the new rail corridor to be wide enough for a metro line as well. One thing for sure, given this is one of the hottest, windiest parts of Adelaide, living in these areas adjacent to a freeway and freight train has the potential to be hell on earth if it is not well planned.

Buckland Park is a disaster waiting to happen. You can masterplan it as much as you like, but the fact remains that it WILL become a ghetto. It just doesn't make sense, but the State Government doesn't see this nor care. Forever ignorant and shooting us all in the foot. Frustrating.
Back on topic, in terms of transport I'd just utilise the spur line currently used by freight that runs alongside the perimeter of Edinburgh and extend that to Buckland Park. The development is intended as housing for future workers in the 'industrial lands' the State Government wants to gradually develop around the northern suburbs south of the Northern Expressway. Buses everywhere simply isn't enough.
Our state, our city, our future.

I love how you took pictures of EVERYTHING.
My favourites include:
- The plane.
- Portaloo.
- The Truth About Hot Chips.
- Fort Knox Records Management.
What was the turnout like? Doesn't look like a full house, sadly.

I went along today as well. Was surprised that they let you walk most of the down track (I was expecting to get up on the on-ramp, and not much further), and they had the machine that's slowly putting the up track together going as well.
I did notice on one of the covered road signs that the official name for the Superway will be the North-South Motorway.

Interesting. I would have expected something a little more flash, like the Wingfield Motorway or similar at least, mainly given our other bland freeway names (Northern and Southern Expy, South Eastern, etc).
