He's also mentioned his desire to upgrade Grenfell Street, the western end of North Terrace (around the new RAH and convention centre upgrades) and fix the North-South bike corridor. He seemingly took a stab at the council for their lack of financial commitment over the Ri erside precinct.

Grenfell/Currie St is just one big mess. For such an important business and transport hub, it really is quite embarrassing and some respect an eyesore. Both streets need a major overhaul including 24/7 bus lanes, attractive lighting, wider footpaths, longer bus shelters and lots and lots of greenery.

This type of crucial investment would attract further development and help beautify the city.

Quite simply - list of importance for Grenfell/Currie.
1. Pedestrians
2. Buses / Taxis
3. General Vehicles

The state government needs to focus as well on improving the the ring route so that North Terrace, Currie/Grenfell Street/s and Wakefield/Grote Street/s are not relied on as a cross city thoroughfare. Obviously works on Park Terrace and Greenhill Road are a step in the right direction, however the fact that Rau has said that the east-west corridor will remain with any upgrades to Victoria Square shows there is a dependancy on the route and it's simply not god enough.

Regarding Currie/Grenfell Streets, I very much agree. In-fact, I wouldn't mind at all it cars were removed from both streets and it became a bus/pedestrian space. It's unacceptable that Grenfell Street between KWS and Hindmarsh Square doesn't have one tree, not one.

Time to bite the bullet and make the significant roads through the CBD one way. This works well in many cities, and particularly well in cities on a grid. Allows more opportunities for public transport, cycle, pedestrian and landscaping through more efficient traffic flow in less lanes.

Funny you should mention that, because (rightly or wrongly) Perth has just turned a few of its one way roads into two way roads again.

Totally agree - think one-way network in Adelaide would work brilliantly and then we can get some exciting developments in converting alternative streets into public realm spaces - I'll vote for that!

Most places where one way streets have been implemented were places where streets were narrow. Adelaide City doesn't tend to suffer that problem. Not saying it's a bad idea, just the normal reasons for it are not present here.

Money on the table for Victoria Square transformation

Deputy Premier John Rau has put his money where his mouth is, suggesting a $20 million parklands fund could be used to transform Victoria Square.

Image

Rau told InDaily yesterday that the city’s central square was “a completely failed piece of design” because it was divided by roads into six parts, acting like “a big traffic island”.

Speaking on radio this morning, Rau said that a $20 million fund, set aside for the parklands and left unspent since the State Government took it to the last election, could be used to replace Victoria Square’s diamond-shaped north-south roads with grass and trees.

“Having Adelaide’s central park … substantially under bitumen and being basically a big roundabout is not okay – it’s not good enough,” Rau told ABC 891 radio.

Rau, recently appointed as Minister for the City of Adelaide, said the fact that no money yet been spent from the fund was a “reason why this [Victoria Square upgrade] is a conversation”.

“[Victoria Square] is technically a park,” he said.

“Under the Parklands Act, we can do a lot better than having it under bitumen and full of cars.

“[However] we have to have decent proposals, something that we will be discussing, and have been discussing with the Adelaide City Council, before we actually press the button and spend the money”.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese told the radio program that “squaring the square is important” and he would work with the State Government to get it done.

“The opportunity here is to open up that space, more grass, more trees, more people and a larger area which then becomes infinitely more usable,” he said.

“I’m a pragmatist – I will work with the Minister and we will find a solution towards delivering South Australia what it probably always deserved.

“I think we both want to have a space which more people can use.

“I don’t believe this is a failed piece of design – and I say that categorically – but it can be better.”

Last month, Haese declared 2016 would be a “year of delivery” for yet-to-be-announced major projects in the CBD.

Rau’s comments in InDaily yesterday, describing the current layout of the square as “just a completely failed piece of design in terms of a city park”, sparked fury among some city councillors at a public meeting last night.

“I don’t need to tell you how offensive that is,” North Ward councillor Phil Martin told the meeting.

“We are being treated like playthings [by the State Government].”

Area councillor Anne Moran also described Rau’s comments as “offensive” and suggested it was hypocritical for Rau to criticise the square’s design, since the State Government had helped to fund it.

However, Rau told 891 this morning that he had privately lobbied for the square to be “squared” before the $28 million “stage one” upgrades the council completed in 2014.

“We would have done much better to spend the money on turning the Victoria Square into a place for people, lawns and trees [rather] than spending the money that was spent on the work that’s been done there,” he said.

“For what it’s worth, at the time, I did privately urge them to get on with the main game, which was fixing the roads.

“[However] I don’t want to labour the point about past decisions of the former Lord Mayor or former council.

“It’s water under the bridge.”

Rau dismissed concerns closing the north-south roads to redirect traffic around the square’s perimeter would cause congestion.

“Frankly, running north-south through the centre of the city should not be the preferred way people get from Gawler to Seaford,” said Rau.

“People are supposed to be using that ring route around the city.”

Phil Martin and Ann Moran are so busy running around being offended they didn't actually listen to what Mr Rau was saying. He wasn't criticising the current and proposed designs for the square as much as the original design from decades ago that made the square into a traffic roundabout, dividing it basically into six traffic islands. When they get over their hurt feelings they may want to contribute more substance to the progressing of this one-third finished project.

I really like this Rau chap, completely agree about Vic Square, a complete, expensive, mess at the moment. Currently, it serves only as a temporary piss up venue for the fringe and a tent city for the tour down under. We now need it to become a usable, accessible public space.

Unless those events are relocated then even after another upgrade it will still be a temporary pissup venue for the fringe and a tent city for the tour down under. The problem is that unless the traffic is greatly reduced on the surface then it will never become much more then a place for temporary events. There needs to be 2 tunnels under it for north/south and each/west traffic

Not a mess and tunneling is not an option as explained in previous posts. Rau has been mis-quoted by the media and ACC. He did not trash the partial redevelopment work to date - just the fact the roads are yet to be squared. Please read Vee's post. She nailed it.

The excellent work to date will be retained and dovetail nicely with future stages - including the arbor. Rau is talking about the next step only - squaring the roads.

Here's a reminder of what we're heading towards.

Full VSQ plan here: http://www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/asse ... report.pdf

To be fair, there is a risk of VSQ becoming a mess - but only if the Govt or ACC start deviating from the above agreed goal.

Yarwood should again be congratulated for getting this ball rolling. Many before him failed woefully. Would Haese or Rau be talking about funding VSQ if nothing had been done to date? The short answer - No.

Interesting the original master-plan had the Three Rivers Fountain at the GPO end (1). The relocation to the southern end has made it fade from view, surrounded at it is by tram poles, wires, traffic lights, signs etc. If it was somewhat elevated it would have the prominent perspective it's always deserved. The lighting needs reconsideration too. Basically disappears at night with the exception of a few coloured lights. It should be a beacon.

Totally agree to make a proper square but also agree important to have good transport corridors (if not tunnels then what?) both ways (N-S/E-W) long term.

Improve the ring road, not encourage more traffic through the city.

We have a separate thread for the ring road I believe.

Cant see this working unless someone has the balls to reduce the roads down to 2 lanes of traffic... max. Would even go as far as suggesting 1 lane and for access to be buses (as much as I hate them) only.
