The University of South Australia will build a new Great Hall underneath Hindley Street in a development incorporating a pool and a large tower containing student accommodation, InDaily can reveal.

Vice Chancellor David Lloyd’s new strategic action plan, finalised last year, called for a Great Hall to become the centre of the University’s activities.

That project received the tick of approval from the university this week. Along with a new cancer centre on North Terrace, the development will take up a large chunk of the uni’s capital budget for the next few years.

The hall itself is anticipated to be underground, a spokesperson for the university told InDaily. The development will contain a new tower of student accommodation and a plaza between the recently completed Smart Building, which the university uses as a student hub.

“Just yesterday we’ve pretty much cleared the way for that to happen beside the Smart Building on Hindley Street,” Lloyd told InDaily.

“In terms of the hall and pool and accommodation, we put that beside the Smart Building.

“We’ll go out to market around tenders and that, we have a concept piece for it but it’s not detailed in any way, shape or form. That’s the other big capital development piece. That’ll describe a centre for the institution, here in City West.”

The hall is likely to contain a gym as well as an indoor sporting space suitable for use by the university’s students and clubs. It’s also likely to serve as a graduation space for the university, which are currently run at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Lloyd also confirmed the university’s long-rumoured interest in the old bus depot site at Franklin St, but he would not talk about the university’s plans for it.

“I’ll tell you about it when I have it,” he said.

Any idea how big a site the UniSA owns here is? Will it just incorporate those 2 storey shops or will it go all the way to Morphett St? Also height wise...what's the limit for this area...looks maybe 12storey to possibly max. 18?

It takes up the entire site infront of the new learning centre, replacing the childcare center on Hindley Street.

Any idea how big a site the UniSA owns here is? Will it just incorporate those 2 storey shops or will it go all the way to Morphett St? Also height wise...what's the limit for this area...looks maybe 12storey to possibly max. 18?

Those two storey shops you mention are on the block to the left of where this render finishes. the street on the left is Clarendon St which houses the Wilson Carpark, UniSA David Pank building and the Bus depot.

Surely something of this magnitude would cause even more interruptions along Hindley St? I mean, the current works already have seen the road blocked off. Would building a great hall under Hindley be an even bigger interruption, or would it be easier than I'm expecting it to be?

Surely something of this magnitude would cause even more interruptions along Hindley St? I mean, the current works already have seen the road blocked off. Would building a great hall under Hindley be an even bigger interruption, or would it be easier than I'm expecting it to be?

Can't imagine how they could feasibly do that without digging a great big pit in the middle of Hindley St ... it's not like it's a tunnel where they can bore below the surface.

Also surely with the new RAH and medical precinct opening up in the west end, it makes sense to move UniSA's health sciences faculties from City East to the City West campus (eg nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, occ therapy, medical radiations)? Hence making clinical practice and research collaboration easier?

City East campus buildings could then be sold to Adelaide Uni to allow for campus expansion. Also there must be cost savings for UniSA in running one campus compared to two.

Could UniSA possibly acquire the Remand Centre on Currie St to expand, with the state govt rebuilding the remand centre in a less prime location?

More than capable of digging a pit without disruption to Hindley Street - Melbourne's Art Centre is a prime example of the depth of the Art Centre building and Hamer Hall is unbelievable and sits within the narrow property.

I believe City East will be used to move courses from Magill into the city, in the long-term plan of decreasing the size of Magill.

And as for the Remand Centre, it's not going anywhere - it's in the most convenient location to the courts precinct, unless they move it next to the new police headquarters on Angus Street, which seems unlikely because Theo Maras has an entire master-plan for that precinct.

i know enough about underground construction to confirm it can be done without digging up Hindley Street.

But I know enough about how things are done in SA to confidently predict that it won't be done without digging up Hindley Street.

Sounds about right. The original plan was to close Magill but opinion was against that so it'll be kept open. With a new RAH I dare say that many of the medical degrees from City East will logically be shifted to City West.

Probably not moving in the short term, but medium to long term why not shift to Mile End or somewhere a short drive away like that? Just somewhere out of the CBD. It's not like it needs to within walking distance of a court ... won't people on remand get driven to court?

Doesn't make sense to have an entire city block with 150m frontage to Currie St - which adds NO VITALITY to the city - taking up valuable space in an emerging boom precinct.

This site (along with the adjacent bus depot) would be perfect for Uni SA to accommodate their health sciences courses. And also create a high profile Currie St address for UniSA, well served by public transport. It all stacks up as a logical proposition (in my opinion).

Or what about somewhere on the other side of the city, maybe Dulwich or somewhere else within the Burnside council area? I'm sure they'd welcome it with open arms.

Dulwich (and indeed most of the Burnside council area) is residential, so of course it would be stupid to put it there. Nobody would seriously suggest putting it in the residential part of Mile End either. But it would be fairly sensible to put it in the industrial part.

But if you look at the render shown, it seems like it's within the property, not under Hindley st it self.
Perhaps they mean it will be below ground level.
