Re: News from the ACC
I think we should get some big screens. Some huge screens playing Sky News 24/7 would help give some atmosphere.
Think times square with the center screen that shows news and TV shows.
More entertainment would be good also. Dazzle land should reopen, but more effort put into the amusements. Surely it was better for them to have it open making not much money, rather than having the whole floor vacant for the past 10 years.
There should also be something similar but aimed at older people. Something that has street access so it can be open later at night.
I know the mall is an open air mall and people would probably scream at this, but one thing I think would be good would be to have a canopy over the top of the mall. A huge half circle glass roof that runs the entire length of the mall. Ever seen how dead the mall is when its raining and if the rain is unexpected its impossible to move as everyone tries to cram under the little shelter there is.
It should be a high canopy as high as they can get it. The ends should be left open also to allow natural airflow.

Re: News from the ACC
One way to make the mall more vibrant is to surround it with student apartments. Just look at the east side of rundle mall, hudsons/kfc/maccas/hj's all do a roaring trade even late into the evening with students from EastWest apartments, and Unihouse.
Speaking of which, it would be nice to get more information about the renaissance arcade student apartment development suggested a while back.

Re: News from the ACC
Could petition myer to reopen dazzleland
Maybe get some airplay on fresh to help the cause.
Guess it won't be the same with the sails installed for jumpers though.. wouldn't be able to get a clear view of the indoor rollercoaster.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I remember hearing years ago that they closed Dazzle land down because they thought they would be able to get more renting the space out as retail shops.
Its always seemed funny to me, that we can't even fill up the retail space in the Myer Centre. You would think a location like that, there would be tenants fighting over the space.
Does anyone know when the Myer Centre was built? Was Dazzle land intended to be up there from the very start? or did it have shops up there at first?

Last time i was there the sails had gone. There was just a net on the second floor covering the void.Howie wrote:Could petition myer to reopen dazzlelandMaybe get some airplay on fresh to help the cause.

Is that right? If so good on them. The nets were very ugly.vozdra wrote:Last time i was there the sails had gone. There was just a net on the second floor covering the void.
Re: News from the ACC
Because no one goes up to the top levels, as its out of peoples way and theres nothing up there to entice people.
Re: News from the ACC
Myer was built in the late 80's/early 90's and dazzleland was one of the original design features.

As far as I know, the company that ran Dazzelland went broke and was liquidated.duke wrote:I don't know if this is true or not, but I remember hearing years ago that they closed Dazzle land down because they thought they would be able to get more renting the space out as retail shops.

Re: News from the ACC
Yeah, I think Dazzleland went bankrupt. Didn't the Myer Centre have something to do with the State Bank collapse? I was young at the time, but I remember there seemed to be a fair bit of controversy about it when it was being built. REM Constructions rings a distant bell.
Re: News from the ACC
There was an article in the Advertiser today about the decline in cinemas in the CBD and mentions rumours of a possible relocation of Greater Union to the Myer Centre.

Re: News from the ACC
In summary so far-
1. First - bring the people back into the city to LIVE - Ie. student resi blocks - herein lies much of the market.
2. Given the general nature of transport in the city - extend the tramlines to areas selected and developed for resi/office/entertainment/cafes etc if possible. Eg Googer St.
3. Develop the laneways - different ambiences to the mall and more interesting - a haunt for cafes etc.
4. Re - open Dazzle land after the increased local population to access more interest and hence profit.
5. Have big LED screens positioned a key points - they create 'life' of their own.
6. Upper level development overlooking Rundle mall.
7. Cinemas in key locations - I can imagine one again in Hindmarsh Sq. due to the 5 high rise blocks going up there - will have many people who would frequent such as place - especially if Renaissance resi is built as well.
8. Re- develop Rundle Mall.
Whatever is done, it's vision, possibilities, action. The vision opens up the drive and motivation. The possibilities then arise that are far greater than previously would be the case. The action will then more likely take place. Even the aspect of finance gains a different perspective with this triumvirate of thoughts. What better place than 'Sensational Adelaide' to give birth to and sustain these powerful ideas.
