You can just turn your wi-fi off when in the CBD. I do. This network is actually really bloody slow. Well it has been for me. Not sure if this new announcement changes anything.

You can just turn your wi-fi off when in the CBD. I do. This network is actually really bloody slow. Well it has been for me. Not sure if this new announcement changes anything.

I use wi-fi when I'm in our studio, so not going to get into the habit of turning wi-fi off and on every time I step outside. I regularly set it to forget the network, but it manages to sneak back in every now and then (must be occasionally changing something so it appears as a new network).

I know Internode's older CityLAN network was slower, and if you logged in with your Internode details (if you were a customer) you'd get faster speed (but counted against your quota). I guess that's gone now though as there's obviously no longer a log-in/guest log-in required to get on the network.

Why would they not extend the CBD coverage just a tad further north to include Adelaide Oval? The map has the hot spot covering up to the South Gate by the looks of it.

Another item on the free Wi-Fi network for Adelaide - "one of the largest city-wide wireless networks in the world". Kudos to the ACC, State Govt and Internode.

Aside from the obvious benefits for locals, visitors, business, students etc, it's interesting to note the comments on this Cisco blog post re access during special events, with emphasis on the role of social media in participation and engagement. Example, the exciting diversity of photos, videos, posts, tweets etc shared during events such as the Fringe and spreading the vibe, engagement beyond the event. Eg overseas, interstate. Old and new media access and utilize these photos etc.

Also coverage in a large slice of the park lands and extra access coming to the SA Museum and State Library. (very popular with Uni and school students) Recent publicity has already seen a huge jump in use of the free Wi-Fi network.

... unveiling of the AdelaideFree Wireless network with the Adelaide City Council and the South Australian Government. The initiative, made possible by the deployment of nearly 200 Cisco Wireless-N Outdoor Access Points, provides free wireless internet to more than 30,000 people across central Adelaide each day.

Since winning the $1.5 million contract with the Adelaide City Council last August, Internode has rolled out the Cisco wireless access points across the entire Adelaide central business district, including 10 mobile access points to utilise at special events.

Providing comprehensive coverage between North Terrace and Wakefield and Grote Streets, as well as broad access in the southern, northern, and parklands areas of Adelaide, the AdelaideFree service is one of the largest city-wide wireless networks in the world.

Enjoying the unique position of permeating almost the entire Adelaide CBD, AdelaideFree will be of monumental importance to local businesses as well as tourists and citizens alike. Large scale city events, where, increasingly, social media dominates proceedings will also benefit from the roll-out.

The Cisco access points were put under the pump during ‘Mad March’ this year, which saw 5,000 simultaneous connections as revellers from the Adelaide Festival, Fringe Festival, and WOMADelaide all scrambled to upload photos and check into events. The network, to the delight of both partygoers and Internode, worked seamlessly throughout.

Since introducing the scheme, Internode has recorded about a 50%increase in the use of the Wi-Fi network in the city of Adelaide. In the coming months, Internode plans to add another 11 Cisco access points at prominent locations, such as the South Australian Museum, and the South Australian State Library, which will be of huge benefit to those who use the library to study and research.

Local businesses will also seek to take advantage of AdelaideFree. Cafes across the city are capitalising on the opportunity to pull customers, as well as increase their own internet presence.

Not much point because the number of devices in the area trying to connect at match time would overwhelm the service. Mobile data of any kind (WiFi, GPRS, 3G, 4G, etc) is limited by available radio bandwidth to a certain number of channels at any one time. For example when Rundle Street fills with people over Mad March, there is no mobile data available let alone WiFi.

STARFISH Developments has kicked off plans for a new apartment tower at Whitmore Square hot on the heels of the highly successful Vue project on King William St.

The company is promising another “landmark” tower for the 1950sqm site on the corner of Wright and Morphett streets.

Woods Bagot has been engaged to design the new building, which Starfish managing director Damon Nagel says will be similar in size to its Vue joint venture with Melbourne-based developer Asian Pacific Group.

“For me, Whitmore Square is the only park that doesn't have a road running through it and we want to create something in the park that resonates with residents into the future - this will become Adelaide’s best residential park,” he said.

“It’s not a boulevard like King William St so it’s not going to be all glass but this project will have more attention put on its design.”

“This is the last square to be developed and we’ve got best site on the square - it’s going to be large - 20 per cent either side of Vue.”

Starfish’s latest acquisition follows the successful Vue project which has sold out more than 80 per cent of its 207 apartments.

The tower will span 28 storeys after recent approval of an extra floor, with early construction works due to commence later this month.

Mr Nagel said an even mix of investors and owner-occupiers had bought into the project.

“There hasn’t been one key to its success - it’s probably a number of things,” he said.

“Adelaide has been screaming out for something different. What’s been proposed in the last couple of years has been very same same while we’ve delivered a very clever design.”

“I think we’ve got it priced right and this is going to be an iconic building - when South Australians see what we’ve done here we’ll sell out our next project in days.”

Knight Frank director Tony Ricketts, who negotiated the Whitmore Square deal alongside Guy Bennett, said the site had attracted more than 70 inquiries from a mix of local, interstate and offshore groups.

“The Trims site sold, 411 King William St sold, this one’s under contract - so there does seem to be more interest for these sites, especially from interstate,” he said.

“Our apartment market is not as progressed as the eastern seaboard and there is a price differential and for all those reasons there seems to be a swelling up of interest.”

Starfish expects to lodge a development application before the end of the year with marketing expected to commence in the first quarter of next year.

As well as its CBD projects, the company is completing two projects at St Clair, which have both been fully sold.

The 40-townhouse Chestnut Crescent precinct is nearing completion while construction of

Avenue - a five-storey development with 59 apartments is under way.

In Western Australia, the developer will shortly commence construction on Marina Drive Apartments - a 35-apartment project at Ascot Waters.

80 GROTE STREET (Next to BUS station)

Could be the catalyst for many more developments for the southern part of the city.

Looks like a massive site with lots of potential. This could be a good site for a large retail development aswell to complement all the new residentsi n the area.
