I drove along South Rd at 1 pm Saturday from Harriet St (just south of Hawker St) to Torrens Rd some 600m it took 23 minutes. The traffic going in the opposite direct is probably still there.

Most frustrating thing was that the variable signage at the South/Regency Rd intersection said the travel time from there to Port Rd was 10 minutes, and the Addinsight app was only saying a 2-4 minute delay. I decided to just go through the works based on that info - big mistake lol!

I went through on Sunday morning about 9am southbound, and total delay was under 5 minutes. Most of that was the Port Road traffic lights needed two cycles as only one lane was open.

Is it just me or is it quite unusual that the Southern Expressway - a major urban freeway with several lanes in either direction - has no lights? Drove home tonight and found it pretty odd, especially in the fog.

Was this to appease local residents?

I wouldn't call the Southern Expressway an urban freeway, more a peri-urban freeway. The section between Darlington and Regency Park would be an urban freeway (in the future).

As for any equivalents, the M4 in Sydney doesn't have lights all the way through to Penrith, and neither does the Hume Freeway/Craigieburn Bypass in Melbourne.

The main reason I think is because it goes through a greenbelt, so for nature's sake they have left the lights out.

Sorry for the bad quality photo, but I'm liking these new big, coloured VMS signs they have installed on the Southern Expressway. I hope these will be installed along the rest of the Darlington and Torrens projects.

This is the only one installed though, isn't it?

Of this type, yes. But I'm sure they would have bought more than one, especially when there will be dozens of ITS gantries all along both projects.

Once you get to the top of the climb at the northern end of SExy, the view at night is incredible. I have friends who live down south and when it's safe, they'll turn their headlights off for a short couple of seconds to appreciate that. Super dark around there, but also, somehow, serene.

Found these two progress photos on the T2T website.

The first one shows the Port/South Road intersection and the second shows the progress of the western service road near the Hawker Street intersection.

I was expecting the noise wall/barrier that's been going up to be higher then it is.

God I can't wait for this one to be finished in 2018. When they were doing the Superway there was virtually no traffic day or night and you could get through the area relatively quickly even at 40km/h speed restrictions.
This one though everyone still wants to use Port Road and South Road.
