Mad March public transport
With the Fringe, WOMAD, Adelaide 500, Adelaide Festival and many more events springing to life over the next month, it really is 'Mad March' in Adelaide.

Additional Mad March public transport services are activated during this time of year to cater for these events, and to get you to where you want to be.

Road closures and detours are sometimes needed as well. We've got the all the details of these for your public transport journeys too.

ADLOOP Tram service
Between mid-February and mid-March, a special ADLOOP tram service will operate select Friday, Saturday and Sundays in addition to standard tram services.

The ADLOOP service will loop the north, east and south ends of the city in a clockwise direction, following the route shown on the ADLOOP Map (PDF 1.04MB).

ADLOOP will operate:

• Saturday 7 March
• Sunday 8 March
• Friday 21 February
• Saturday 22 February
• Sunday 23 February • Friday 13 March
• Saturday 14 March

Bus services
Additional bus services will operate for specific routes on select Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, these include the the 540, 544, J1G, J2, and G10C services.

Fridays: 28 Feb, 6 March & 13 March
Saturdays: 15 Feb, 29 Feb, 7 March & 14 March
Sunday: 8 March

Thankfully the city loop has more appropriate dwell times of 3 minutes at each terminus at Festival Plaza and Botanic Gardens. This will make it a bit more like a loop rather than a haphazard 3 way shuttle.

The Adelaide Metro public transport contracts have now been awarded for the provision of bus and light rail, following a rigorous tender process.

This is a new era for public transport in South Australia and an exciting opportunity to enhance and optimise our services for customers.

The contracts are being delivered in two stages commencing in July.

Extensive community consultation will be undertaken from April on a proposed enhanced network providing improvements to the services we offer.

The New Network, Stage 2, is proposed to be introduced across most areas later this year, driving faster services, a simpler network and enabling a greater emphasis on an integration across all modes.

The New Network for Outer North will coincide with the completion of Gawler rail electrification, focussed on feeding services to the Gawler rail line and optimising transport in the northern suburbs.

The contracts have been awarded with customers at the forefront and a focus on delivering optimised services, value for money and innovative transport solutions.

Contracts have been awarded for eight years, with an option to extend a further two years, and provide an exciting opportunity to enhance and optimise bus and tram services for our newly awarded operators in;

I reckon this will be a half-axed project like any other PT project. This would be actually good though if it were to satisfy the passengers' news.

I’m highly in favour of this outsourcing but yet I’m astonished that the spin doctors thought it was a good idea to spin it this way. They did a post on Facebook too.

The Libs have been horrible at reading the mood of the electorate recently.

I think it will be interesting to see how this goes.

I do want to see what actual investments they are making to make it better.

Adelaide Metro going cashless from today.

Bus drivers will no longer sell paper tickets, which will undoubtedly speed up service times.

MetroCARD balance will now be updated within the hour, rather than the current 24-hour period. More info soon.

Paper tickets being slowly phased out, with a reduction in the number of places that sell them.

Yes, let's do it now during the coronavirus epidemic. Perfect opportunity to go "cashless" public transport.

I think I've read before that credit card payments will be implemented eventually too... avoids the need for metrocards entirely and makes it more accessible for less frequent users who don't bother carrying around a metrocard. Would make sense to bring that in at the same time as single tickets get removed, because you can't buy a metrocard on a train etc. if you don't already have one...

Please don't get rid of MetroCard...

1) Not everybody has a credit card to use on public transport

2) Nor will banks give credit cards to every person in society....some are too young, some are too old, some are an extremely poor credit risk

3) International tourists credit cards would not necessarily work in Adelaide. Yes Visa Amex MasterCard etc will....but others certainly won't and never will.
Also as a tourist do you want to pay an international transaction fee every time you take a bus in Adelaide?
I don't.....I have been overseas where I have been forced to use a credit to buy a train ticket....very annoying. I prefer to buy the local smart transport card.
