Yeah, Grenfell Street gets no pedestrian traffic...

It doesn't sound like such a good idea to me as it would create more
congestion on the other roads such as Pirie Street.

Also how would they stop people from driving there cars down the road,
some visitors from interstate would probably still drive down grenfell street.

How would making it a transit mall make it empty and lifeless? You're going to get far more people getting on and off buses then you are getting in and out of cars.
It's not too hard to stop private vehicles going down. They manage ok in Melbourne.

I want to see Victoria Square go ahead. For about a century it has represented the "nothing gets done in Adelaide" attitude, and even if it isn't the perfect "meeting place" envisioned, it will surely signal a change in the mindset of Adelaide. Not to mention I think it's a reasonably good plan in itself (although the Aboriginal culture centre isn't needed within the square, and the Central Market Arcade needs to be completely revamped to give a strong connection from the square through to the markets).

Thanks David, and I appreciate what your saying, but essentially the Victoria Square plan is landscaping. There is absolutely nothing in it that would draw me there and of course I could be the only one with this opinion (I somehow doubt it though).

I personally don't think it offers anything the parklands don't already have, only it is surrounded by roads and traffic and no car parking...

As with the preachers I don't think you need to hear more of the same but walking down Rundle Mall last night there was a sense of anxiousness and it felt tense (this was prior to the preachers arriving). Once they arrived it turned into a family UN friendly circus, with yelling, screaming and lots of antagonism.

Sincerely hope the SA Govt can pass some legislation soon.

The Victoria Square project is far more than just 'landscaping' or 'adding a few trees' to me. It will essentially reorient a major part of our city in favour of pedestrians, as well as give us another high quality event space. I see that as a statement with benefits for the rest of the city. Not to mention, as others have, that Victoria Square is a psychological blocking point that needs to be unclogged.

I agree wholeheartedly. To me VSQ is the heart of the city. The expected $100m price tag represents good value, and as long as the major features (sunken event space, arbor, wetlands, heaps of lush greenery, and plenty of integrated seating) remain in the plan then it will become a place where tourists, city residents and workers choose to dwell. It may even trigger an increase in building in the immediate vicinity, and (fingers crossed) the Hilton may get a revamp.

I do agree with Ben that the majority of Adelaide suburban residents will not use it as a meeting place, but imho that's a minor issue. Many will visit before/after spending time in the Gouger St/Central Markets region.

Re. the VSQ aboriginal cultural centre - i like the idea but doubt it will generate extra foot traffic. It does, however, show respect to the original land owners which makes it worthwhile if for no other reason that the 'vibe' it generates.

David & the broader ACC, you have my approval to chip away at the VSQ project It CAN be done in a phased manner. Also PLEASE lobby hard(er) for cash during the next State & Fed elections.

As a young South Australian (25) I feel the Victoria Square proposal is a great idea. I can imagine going there quite often, perhaps after having lunch in the central markets (every weekend) or to watch a major sporting event on the proposed big screen TV. This is a very important part of our beautiful city, as it is the 'heart' and more often than not one must pass through it to reach other parts of the city. For these reason I truly believe a revamped Victoria Square is a great idea!!

agreed, dont care what the new proposal looks like, the current state of the square is awful and we're not ever gonna change this negative attitude outsiders have to Adelaide with our central square looking like total crap. Image is everything

The fact they turned up to this usually peaceful opening march for the Feast Festival, just confirms again they are nothing but foul mouthed trouble makers only after conflict and attention. Due to this harassment last night, Feast organisers will now seek legal advice and restraining orders tomorrow.

I gotta say it's fantastic the Adelaide City Council have allowed Feast to transform Light Square into a Festival Hub. Gay, straight, bi, whatever it's a great way to utilise this usually quiet space. Other festivals and events should take note.

BTW It's great to see our Lord Mayor openly supporting an event like this on social media and even joining this march himself with his wife and kids.

With the impending mining boom, Adelaide City Council/Government should start creating a vision for the city like they have done in Birmingham in the UK:

This talk of Victoria Square and a carousel in Rundle Mall etc is not visionary, it's tunnel vision.

I also think making the River Torrens an entertainment precinct has been lost with the hospital development but a bridge linking to the Casino AND the Convention Centre should be maintained. Instead, expand the entertaining area around the Adelaide Oval, there's enough parklands to breed cattle and this ain't the 1900's.

Alternatively, ditch the golf course, there's too many in Adelaide as it is. Don't you guys have work to do? This will create an entertainment precinct on the Torrens you all crave so much.

Rundle Mall needs widening, it feel claustrophobic. OK, that last comment is too expensive.... you get the drift.

Or create an extra pedestrian mall up Prospect Road as it runs through Prospect (with a tram looping through the middle because it is a long road).

Btw, there are lots of people on here saying "That's a good idea". Every time you see an idea on here you like, reply here with encouragement, but also contact the city council. We may only be a vocal minority, but at least we have a voice and city council will know that there are people out there really wanting something (even if not everything is the same idea) to happen. The more people that do this, the stronger we are.

Parliament is today meeting to debate the bylaw which would ban Rundle Mall preachers from using amplifiers and platforms. Fingers crossed. Preachers will need seek council approval to use amplifiers and stages.
