SAVE THE DATE - MFS Open Day - Sat 10 November 2012!

The annual Metropolitan Fire Service Open Day will be held on Saturday, 10 November 2012, straight after the Christmas Pageant.

The Metropolitan Fire Service will open the doors to the Adelaide Fire Station at 99 Wakefield Street, Adelaide between 11.15 am and 2.30 pm, providing
post-pageant fun for children and families.

It will also be a chance for the public to celebrate 150 years of the MFS, which has been serving the community of South Australia since November 1862.

Highlights of the day include:
* An aerial rescue exercise and rope rescue from heights
* An Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) demonstration
* A close look at our fire fighting appliances and equipment
* View our new Wall of Remembrance recently unveiled on our 150th anniversary
* Discover how the cause of house and other structure fires are investigated
* Learn how your family can prevent or survive a house fire, including how to escape a fire
* Find out what a fire fighter faces at a fire through computer simulation
* An insight into hazardous substance response
* An interactive child fire safety education display, including the 'Stop, Cover, Drop and Roll' game
* A road crash rescue demonstration.

MFS Open Day is a free, family friendly event involving demonstrations throughout the day, and plenty of activities to interest people of all ages.

NOTE: If MFS Open Day is a day affected by extreme heat, the MFS will modify activities and displays to ensure the comfort and safety of visitors and
staff.

FOREIGN competitors and officials attending next month's Lifesaving World Championships can expect teasing, casual service and crude language.

A comprehensive cultural guide prepared by the host Surf Life Saving Australia also gives advice on how to order a beer, phrases such as "loo", "she'll be right" and "feeling a little crook".

The Rescue 2012 Australian Lifestyle Briefing document has been sent to 103 team officials from 42 countries to prepare athletes, delegates and supporters for their trip Down Under.

More than 3500 competitors from Australia, Asia, Europe, South America, the US and Africa will contest the event from November 7 to 18.

The event will take place across Glenelg Beach, Christies Beach and the State Aquatic Centre.

Rescue 2012 protocol manager John Fitzgerald, a leading official who was formerly SLSA's director of development, wrote the briefing document.

The former educator said the contents were a combination of research and his own personal experiences.

He said they were designed to make overseas visitors feel more comfortable and better enjoy their stay.

"This is written for people coming from overseas who are part of the international lifesaving community ... competitors and ILS officers," he said.

"I don't think we are putting ourselves down. This is how we are. We speak quickly and are hard to understand.

"We take short cuts in our language and we expect people to understand what we are saying. We are not precise in our language."

The briefing document mixes generic tourist information, such as currency, driving, beach safety and sun protection, with quirky local customs and mannerisms.

The guide also aims to assist with the language barrier.

It advises that, in Australia, teasing can be "a common way of testing someone and letting them know they've been accepted".

"Just have a laugh and you'll get along just fine," it says.

Visiting lifesavers were given a tantalising preview of the diverse, fresh and high-quality cuisine on offer in Adelaide, and also a frank appraisal of the service they might encounter.

"Australian service is often more casual than in many countries, even in expensive restaurants and hotels. You will very rarely get fawning service."

NOVEMBER has emerged as the new month to mark in your social calendar.

In the festive tradition of Mad March, seven world-class events are set to attract more than 15,000 people to South Australia next month.

Events South Australia general manager Hitaf Rasheed said the major events would draw participants and supporters from across the world.

The events begin with the Rescue 2012 Lifesaving World Championships on November 7.

The Feast Festival, Credit Union Christmas Pageant, Australian International 3 Day Event, World Bowls Championships and Golden Oldies World Cricket Festival will follow. "We are really proud of the calendar of events we have in South Australia," Ms Rasheed said.

"There's a lot of talk that there's a lot at the front end of the year, but what we're saying is there's a lot at the back end of the year as well.

"I don't think we've ever had so many world championships, world-class events, in November. We want people to know about them and explore them."

Preceding the Golden Oldies World Cricket Festival on November 25 is the highly anticipated second Test between Australia and the No. 1 ranked Test team in the world, South Africa, at the Adelaide Oval on November 22-26.

Ms Rasheed said the year-long events calendar is "conservatively estimated at $250 million in terms of expenditure" but, in terms of promoting SA to the world and building the state's confidence, it is priceless.

"Nothing can change an image of a city or tell people about that city more than an event or festival," she said.

"That is what the events calendar does and certainly what this month is doing ...

"We estimate there will be well and truly over 15,000 people travelling to these events. Together these events have a projected economic impact of more than $35 million, and they will further strengthen South Australia's reputation as the home of world-class events and festivals."

Representatives of the major events brought colour to Victoria Square yesterday.

"It's a misnomer to say nothing happens," Ms Rasheed said.

"Whether you're looking for family fun, lively entertainment or spectacular sporting activities, it's all happening in Adelaide."

Government House Open Day

The House was built in 1839/40 as the home and office of the Governor of South Australia and for providing Vice Regal hospitality. It is still used by the
current Governor, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR, and Mrs Liz Scarce for the same purposes.

It's the oldest current Government House in Australia and the second oldest continuously occupied house in Adelaide.

Visit our Open Day and see:
* specially set up displays and memorabilia of historic significance
* the State dining table set with silver and crystal for a formal dinner
* South Australian paintings on loan from the Art Gallery of South Australia
* where the police inspector was murdered in 1862.

In the grounds, Foodbank SA will have displays and information available and lots of family fun with a children's activity tent, face painting & balloons.
There will be special appearances & activities by players from Port Adelaide Football Club

- Foodbank's partner in the Power to End Hunger campaign.
BBQ and refreshments will be available for purchase, benefiting Foodbank SA.

Staff and friends of the House will be on hand to guide you.
Garden tours will be provided by the Friends of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide.
Members of the Victoriana Society of South Australia will be dressed in period costumes.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the Adelaide Youth Orchestra, Suzuki Students, Brighton Secondary School and Glenelg Brass Band.

Feast Festival starts this Saturday from the 10th to the 25th November.

Light Square once again will be the 'Feast Hub' and will host the opening party from 7:00pm. This follows on from the Pride March which will take place in Victoria Square at 6:00pm and traverse along Gouger and Morphett Streets to the Hub.

Feast Festival is not promoted nearly enough in mainstream media.This state was once a trailblazer in social reform, sadly not these days. FEAST seems like the poor cousin of Adelaide festivals, and does not get too much promotion. Not sure if the lack of media attention is due to the conservative "Adelaide establishment" or wheather the organisers just plan to keep it for the local community.Or is the Adelaide local gay community also conservative?. Anyway, with perfect weather forecast for Saturday night, opening should be a great night.

Used to love Feast when I was in Adelaide, definitely one of Australia's best.

Despite being the third biggest LGBT festival (wiki). Feast Festival is still mostly aimed at the LGBT community and is quite minor compared to other SA festivals. Though like majority of festivals, Feast continues to get stronger and gains more exposure each year. This year alone it's scored ANZ Bank as their main sponsor and the hub at Light Square will be bigger this year.

Feast does however get advertised locally and interstate, but mostly through LGBT media outlets.

Hopefully Feast Festival will continue to get stronger in the future and gain more exposure, making it a true major event. Putting it up there with the likes of the Fringe, Adelaide Festival etc

The two week 2012 Life Saving World Championships in Adelaide, which ended today, were deemed to be a great success.
Thousands of competitors, from more than 40 different countries, came to Adelaide for this international event.

'Mad March' does appear to have a challenger in 'rad November'.

It would be great to see more promotion and coverage interstate of our many excellent large events in news bulletins etc. but it seems these are interested only in bad news or sensationalism, hence a distorted view.

The World Lawn Bowls Championships start tomorrow in Adelaide with HQ at Lockleys Bowling club, where games will be played (as well as the adjacent Holdfast Bay club).

The Championships are spread over 16 days with (men's and women's) teams from 27 countries.
This should be great exposure for our city and another economic boost during the busy November month, especially in the western/ beach suburbs.
