According to the May 18 Messenger (p15) Wallis has not actually made the decision on whether or not they'll demolish the cinema, but they have advertised tenants for a 2 storey retail complex which would replace it if they do. Holdfast Bay Council had twice rejected redevelopment plans, but Wallis won an appeal in the Environment Resource & Development Court in February.
The cimema may be saved if ONLY the demolition orders aren't already signed.

Re: #Proposed - 8 South Esplanade (Glenelg) - 5 levels

Good news, this one is going ahead.

I walked along the esplanade yesterday and noticed that scaffolding has been installed all around the
existing 3 level building.

Hopefully that ugly building on the northern side of this one will be redeveloped sometime over the next
couple of years.

At least they are not replacing it with another boring glass box. The new design sort of uses the old building as a style guide almost.

There is a story on Today Tonight very shortly including an update on the cinema. Could be interesting...

I heard last night that the interior of the Glenelg cinema is currently being dismantled in preparation for demolition...
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Very sad - Wallis have stuck their heads in the sand and claim no one has come forward to buy the site - what did Taplin try to do?? I really hope it can be saved but it looks like Wallis are going ahead with it no matter what.

Not only will there be a loss of something with some architectural merit, a connection with theatre history but something with a bit of height - any replacement development will probably be one floor (after resistance from the loccals of course) or remain an open block.

Of note - the Regent in Bris is coming down as well - replaced by a 42 floor bldg. Only the foyer will remain. Constructed in 1929 with 1000 seats and sheer opulence re interior presentation. The last of it's kind up here. Was in the ilk of the theatre in Glenelg.

Heh heh! Each to his own - I love going to the movies.
Surely you can't find EVERY movie boring?

Glenelg cinema to be demolished

6 Jul 11 @ 09:15am by Emma Altschwager

SHOPS: An artists' impression of the development planned to replace the former Wallis cinema.

THE Glenelg Cinema will be demolished and a two-storey retail complex built in its place, Wallis has confirmed.

The Guardian Messenger reported last month contractors were gutting the inside of the Jetty Rd cinema even though Wallis was yet to announce its decision for the site’s future.

Wallis spokesman Philip Roberts yesterday told the Guardian Messenger the demolition process, which included the cinema’s art deco facade, was underway.

Mr Roberts said Wallis had asked real estate agent Colliers to advertise about seven tenancies for the development.
``I understand it’s going well so far,’’ he said.

``It’d be nice to think, subject to getting pre-commitment from lessees, we’d be building on the site by the end of the year.’‘

The move comes after a community campaign to save the cinema was launched in May.

A Colliers online advertisement says tenancies at the site will be available from early to mid 2012.

Pick up your copy of next week’s Guardian Messenger for more information.

It will be one of those dumb decisions that will be regretted later in life...

Thanks Wallis

It is disgusting that such a beautiful building will be demolished for THAT.

If the new building was taller and/or architecturally interesting I could live with it, but to be replaced by a 2 level pre-fabricated box is beyond me. :wallbash:

Another sad loss of a gracious Art Deco building and for what?
Only these photos and memories will remain.

Demolishing this building is a travesty. Replacing it with that proposal is unforgivable.

Not sure if it's been posted before, but here it is again.

Good to see I'm not the only one on this forum that thinks this is totally horse crap. Wallis have made the wrong decision and will pay for it in the long run. Why not just demolish the Piccadilly theatre at the same time Wallis "family"??!!
