I hate to start up another stadium thread, however, I was talking to someone 'in the know' yesterday. We were talking about the Hindmarsh precinct and what is/will be happening there over the next few years. He said there'll be a lot more happening down there once Hindmarsh Stadium is 'relocated'. I'm like "Wha?', What have you heard?". As a lot of your would know Dario wants to build a 45k seater somewhere around the CBD. Well apparently that stadium is all but approved to be built on the redeveloped rail yards. I said "What about the Marj?"... his answer: "There's room for both". Dario and co apparently already have financial backing and investors and my insider yesterday confirmed the stadium could definitely be built for $4-500million, all they need is some land. It was said that the government is just waiting for a 'politically favourable' time to announce the stadium.
Taken from forum.adelaidereds.com.au...
It's probably just speculative chatter, but I thought if anyone could dig out the truth, its someone on here.
Sorry for digging up the old thread!

Maybe that's why The Marj was downsized? Who knows, but we'll see.

There is no way they would build a stadium next to a hospital.

If labor proposes building a rectangular stadium within the CBD, I will not only vote for the liberals but i'll donate money to them.
Would be the biggest waste of time/money and land. A league crowds are down and the demand for a rectangular stadium is not there, if its to be done it has to be done proper. A multi purpse stadium or nothing.

As a general sports supporter I would hope that this isn’t the prevailing view of AFL fans across Adelaide.
Hypothetical rant here...
If we assume that this proposal has legs, which I strongly doubt, it could be consequently assumed, that in order for the plan to progress beyond pie-in-the-sky status it would need (at the least) tacit State Govt (even ACC) support. Given the State Government pledge to improve AAMI for fans and to bring it to FIFA accredited standard (to the tune of $100M), it is possible to see that the Rann Government is somewhat supportive of improving AFL facilities specifically, and facilities for Football (Soccer) in general, even if it only for big attendance Socceroos games.
If the proposed rectangular stadium was to be built, perhaps in the parklands, despite the private money pledged, it would be safe to assume there would be some level of Government financial support (even if it were in the form of guarantees).
Thus, I would suggest if the above posts are even slightly true, that the State Government has been amenable to a multi-purpose stadium in the parklands all along – and the reticence of the AFL and SANFL to relinquish operational and financial control of any hypothetical stadium may have blown their chance to have one built on the public purse.
Yes, A-League crowds are down, but Socceroos crowds aren’t – and it is at the higher end market that this stadium would be specifically aimed at, even if it were operated and used weekly by Adelaide United. Secondly, have you seen the stadium proposed? (40,000+ all seater, based upon the Frankfurt Waldstadion built/refurbished for the 2006 World Cup – if thats not proper, I don’t know what is...) Regardless of whether the demand is there right now, 30,000+ crowds may be possible in 8-10 years time when it would be ready.

End hypothetical rant.
So why shoot down a proposal for a rectangular stadium (however unlikely) if it is possible that the desired multi-purpose stadium may have been shot down by AFL and SANFL intransience? In making it a political game aimed at improving their own patch down at West Lakes, which was successful too, mind, it would be just desserts to the SANFL and AFL if Adelaide United could build such a stadium with private money, given the waste of public funds the upgrades to AAMI are.

Oh yeah!!! build a stadium for sports that are played on an oval field walking distance from Adelaide oval!!!
brilliant idea.
personally a dedicated rectangular stadium makes more sense.

i disagree Cruise. It's been brought up many a time that Adelaide oval is only really suitable for cricket (for various reasons) which kinda sucks.. but at least we've got our epic little cricket ground in the heart of the cbd, and u can't deny the good atmos in there (even though the facilities are shite). I hate to say it, but i'm starting to think we need 2 new stadiums!(this will never happen obviously) but either way the benefits would be outstanding for SA.
Does anyone agree that the proposed hospital (i can't say the name anymore) is a huge example of planning gone wrong in our state? Of course we need a new hospital!! But.. there??????? come on.... rebuild the rah and don't piss away taxpayers money dammit

It'd cost more money and be disruptive to rebuild the RAH on site than to build what we need from scratch on a new site. We just need a better site.

yep - agree 100%. Keswick is the perfect location. Also could buy out Le Cornu's to have a massive site (perhaps including a residential TOD)...

Well said mate! Could'nt agree more. There is a significant area there - accessable to main roads as well - but no tram. Rail could have a station behind it though from what I remember. (Have'nt been on this line for 22 years).

Ashford private hospital is right across Anzac Hywy. That entire block is described by Anzac Hywy, the rail line and Maple ave (or Leader street if you want to include the light industrial on the LeCornu's block) -- also on the other side of the railway is the Showgrounds.
It is an interesting area. Much potential. But needs a lot of though to make it work.

Why would you want Lecornu's to be bought out and moved?
History would suggest that when Lecornu's moves we get left with a black hole on the landscape that wont be filled for more than 20 years
