The South Australian Government has announced it will duplicate the Southern Expressway in Adelaide's southern suburbs at a cost of $445 million.
Construction is expected to start at the end of 2011 and would be completed by the middle of 2014.
The Liberal Opposition is also expected to announce a plan to duplicate the Expressway if it wins the March 20 poll.
Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond stopped short of making any announcement when she was on ABC Radio today.
"I'm not making any announcements this morning ... I'm no longer in charge of my own destiny and I know that there's a timetable about things that are being announced and I'm not going to be changing that timetable on air," she said.
The Expressway operates in only one direction at any time.
It is understood the Liberals would commit $275 million in a first term of government to the road duplication plan.

Great. The road is supposed to cost $445million. First they built half a freeway, now they want to build half of the second half.

if people want to play the blame game then fine... let's blame dunstan's labour govt for binning the MATS plan back in 1970 and putting a 10 year moratorium on freeway construction in adelaide.
dunstan put the kybosh on MATS but he never had a plan b to tackle adelaide's transport problems and basically sat on his arse for 10 years doing nothing.
you could argue all of adelaide's transport problems are labour's fault going back the the 1970's.
$300M is a lot but if you think the Libs would spend 1 cent less then I'm sorry but you are deluding yourself. Opposition parties always promise to slash spending and waste while in opposition but fail to deliver when they win government. PR spending is just a fact of modern politics and one over which no major Australian party can honestly claim to have the moral high ground.zap brannigan wrote:
