From the City Messenger:
Baulderstone preferred for Adelaide Oval redevelopment
6 Sep 11 @ 01:30pm by Tim Williams

BAULDERSTONE has been named as the preferred contractor to deliver the State Government’s $535 million redevelopment of Adelaide Oval.

Infrastructure Minister Patrick Conlon said discussions with Baulderstone would continue over the next few weeks with a view to awarding the contract in October.

“Through an exhaustive tender process we’ve identified the Baulderstone Pty Ltd team as a project partner that will deliver a world class city stadium on time and on budget,” Mr Conlon said.

“We’re on target to start building at the end of the coming cricket season and I look forward to taking up the AFL on their offer of a 2014 season opener at Adelaide Oval.”

Three bids were shortlisted for the project.

Baulderstone has the endorsement of the Stadium Management Authority which will operate and manage Adelaide Oval.

Cabinet will need to approve the contract.

Baulderstone is one of the largest building and engineering companies in Australia, with over 1400 employees nationally.

It has built the Sydney Opera House, Brisbane’s Story Bridge, Etihad Stadium in Melbourne and the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Adelaide Oval ready for AFL by 2014

FOOTBALL has been promised the new Adelaide Oval will be ready for AFL action in 2014.

"That is a very significant plus for football," said SANFL president John Olsen on Tuesday when the State Government declared Baulderstone was its preferred contractor for the $535 million Oval refit.

Work - which will turn the Oval into a 50,000-seat stadium - will begin in March.

Infrastructure Minister Pat Conlon declared: "We will keep cricket playing at Adelaide Oval during the build and football will be at Adelaide Oval in 2014."

The first AFL game for the Oval is destined to be a Friday night, season-opening Showdown between Port Adelaide and the Crows.

The AFL is to announce its part in funding the project by the end of the month. Its contribution is to be settled after the AFL closes negotiations with its players on a new collective bargaining agreement.

Very interesting.

From the video one gets an indication that 4 tower cranes will be used for the construction of the new Adelaide Oval.

So if my understanding of that video is correct, the stadium redevelopment should take about 30 seconds.

No wonder it's costing $500 mill. I'm ok with that.

I wish they would be a bit more contemporary in their thinking and be done with outdated light towers in stadium design. Surely the proper mounting of spotlights on the stands would provide sufficient light for TV cameras? Rarely do you see light towers on new stadiums this large throughout the rest of the world.

Can someone answer me this, is there any truth to the rumours that the already completed new Western stand needs millions of dollars for fixing? Or is this just more bullshit from Rob Lucas?

it isn't "fixing" it is upgrading to be able to do what we now want it to do.

What do you mean? Why is it in need of upgrades already? I'm not trying to be a smart arse, I'm just genuinely perplexed as to what needs to be upgraded.

One of the issues is media facilities.

Currently, media facilities are in the Bradman Stand, which is ideal for cricket as it is behind the bowlers arm. However, for football, the prime position for media is side on. As the new eastern stand will face the sun, a new media facility will be built on the western side. I have heard suggestions of a Lord’s style pod over the new western stand, but can not confirm accuracy.

Furthermore, new toilet facilities will be built and probably better access (escalators) to the upper levels of the western stand will be included.

they built it for cricket - for use predominately in Summer - also once once the idea of future developments became more realistic certain "extras" were scaled down because they knew that they would be included as part of the upgrade - I believe it was a bit of positioning by the SACA and it wasn't going to cost anymore to get it done when the whole stadia was upgraded.

also you are using the word upgrade in the sense of making something bad to good

in this sense its make something good - better or even just making it different it you like.

The work done to date on the Western Stand isn't being questioned.

Thanks for clearing up.

It's hard to work out sometimes what's spin and what's practical solutions. Everything the Labor government ever does is terrible if Rob Lucas' twitter account is to be believed. I understand he is in Opposition, but there's criticising and then there's lying. The two often blur (on both sides might I add).

In reality the current State Governmnet bring this kind of stuff on themselves given how muddy they make the Water....the SACA isn't exactly transparent either!!

I'm looking forward to March next year - I work just down the road from the Oval so I'll even try to get down and take some photos!
