The British founded this city, the British gave places and streets names. It's not like the Aboriginals stood in the spot where Light Square is today, 50,000 years ago and staked out a name for that plot of land already.

Seriously, it's just sheer baloney that this issue is even being bandied around by the dead wood of the ACC, who fail to address the far more important issues at hand, such as getting on with the Development Plan Review, working on the Splash Adelaide initiative, etc.

Oh, honestly. What a non-issue. Adding native names to local places in deference to the people who occupied the land before us is hardly anything to get up in arms about. In fact, I reckon it actually adds some value to the places.

There are far more egregious examples of political correctness to have concerns about, such as the spread of superficial acknowledgement of country statements at events of zero significance -- which, IMO, devalues the sentiment for all involved.

Shuz has spoken . I’m glad your in the minority in this day of age. You might want to jettison some of that prejudice if you want to be a planner. By the way the native people were nomadic, they didn’t believe in plots of land or ownership of it.

Well said mattblack. Just to clarify, it's not purely correct that Aborigine's were nomadic. That fact depends on resource availability, season etc.

The article does not not say a name change, but that names will be introduced.

With no disrespect to the aboriginals, this is just confusing to users and IMHO it is a precursor to actually changing the names over time. Once reaction settles you will see the aboriginal names first and the originals in brackets. Then the originals wont be used. This is gradualism and political corerectness - give names to things that never originally had anglo saxon titles - leave the others alone.

The original titles are now interwoven with the very fabric of the ID of Adelaide.

That's fanciful. There's absolutely no indication of that happening at all. These aren't the first alternate names to be introduced, and in each prior case, the original names continue to take precedence.

THE ‘BEAUTY’ OF ADELAIDE – What kind of a planning system allows such visual abominations to occur?

If this is regarding billboards then I really don't see the issue, they bring income to owners of that land/building aswell as some colour to our streets. I actually think the Adelaide City Council needs to look at installing some billboards on some of their structures, eg the ugly carpark above Topham Mall.

There is quite a few prominent locations that have a boring blank wall facing a major street, like the William Grenfell Centre on KWS or Polites building on Currie Street that would be perfect for advertisements. I'm sure businesses like ANZ or Channel Seven would jump at the chance to have that type of exposure on a major CBD street.

Also you included a photo of a sign above a popular restaurant on the cnr of Gouger and Morphett Streets, what's the problem? It looks fine. However the Bob Jane Tmart needs to go, that does not belong in such a prominent area.

I think I speak on behalf of everyone by asking the council to consider making the laneway activation initiative permanent.

Push for laneways to close for dining

TRADERS are calling for selected lanes to be closed for al fresco dining following a successful summer trial.

Chesser Cellars owner Primo Caon has handed the City Council a petition with thousands of signatures calling for Chesser St to be permanently closed for outdoor dining.

“It was brilliant, everybody loved it,” Mr Caon said.

“We really had, what I consider, the thing Adelaide has been lacking all this time.”

Mr Caon was confident the project could survive winter if outdoor heaters were installed.

Rigoni’s Bistro part-owner Tony Bailey would consider buying more outdoor furniture if Leigh St was closed off as it was each Friday in the summer.

“Generally speaking, it was flat out every Friday,” Mr Bailey said.

“It used to be that after 5pm people would go out to the suburbs and the city would die.

“But (with the street closed) there were little pockets of activity through the city and you could walk from pocket to pocket and have a look. We have had a couple of people ask if it was going to continue and they were very disappointed when it finished.”

Saldechin owner Raul Barreto launched Shangri-La in the City, which included an outdoor bar with artificial grass and tables and chairs on Gresham Place.

He said the council had given him permission to extend his project until July.

He said the project was an “incredible success” which was “absolutely viable” in winter.

“People are as keen as mustard to keep it going, particularly for this part of the city,” Mr Barreto said.

“Adelaide has the best weather in Australia so we should be having heaps of outdoor venues and outdoor eating.”

The Property Council last week unveiled a list of the laneways it wanted to be enlivened with outdoor dining, public art and live music (see factfile below).

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said the council would consider the issue in the next month.

good news, the ball finally appears to be rolling for laneways.. we have private business on-board and willingness from all levels of government.

Good selection of lane ways. I've always wanted to see something happen for Austin Street. Gilbert Place isn't mentioned, as I suppose it's already somewhat activated, but it could be easily made more lively with a few improvements -- could be a real nightlife destination.
