This would be a good item in the mix. As long as the government gives them a fair lease (to both sides). We don't want to be giving away civic land for nothing. Also assuming the future hospital does not subsequently complain about the "noise".ml69 wrote:Good opportunity for Calvary to consolidate their two sites in North Adelaide and Wakefield St onto one central location.skyliner wrote:Might be 'Calvary ' (with reference to the hill Christ was crucified on). ADELAIDE - TOWARDS A GREATER CITY SKYLINE
There is plenty of room on the RAH site for a private hospital, new city high school, extension of University of Adelaide campus as well as parklands extension.

Would like to see both.
A high school on the eastern side of the site, a 200/300 bed private hospital on Frome Road (which could also include a new Dental Hospital). The heritage listed buildings on the corner could be re-furbished into a modern art gallery - under management of the state art gallery and a museum for Aboriginal Culture - move the collection that exists on display (along with everything in storage) at the State Museum into it's own facility; both these ideas give the Art Gallery and Museum the extra space they have required to entice larger international exhibitions to Adelaide and also allows them to put a lot of their collections that are in storage on display.
Incorporate all these facilities onto the one site, keeps it diverse and ensures there isn't a massive fallout from the hospital moving to the west, upholds business confidence in the area.

A hotel / resort complex with nightclubs, restaurants, tennis courts and a swimming pool out the back
would be great. I know it's a bit of a pipe dream but it would be a good location for it.

There will be money in the South Australian budget for a second city high school campus.
Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis has promised $85 million over five years to build a school for 1,000 students on the site of the current Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Mr Koutsantonis says the campus will have a focus on health and science subjects.
"This will be a first-class facility that will nurture the health researchers of the next generation," he said.
The new campus has been promised for the start of the 2019 school year.
The hospital will move to the other end of North Terrace.
Thursday's budget also includes $14.2 million over four years to make school counsellors available for every public school student in the state by 2015-16.

Apartments, offices and arts precinct being planned for old Royal Adelaide Hospital site amid push to shelve school

APARTMENTS, offices and a major arts and cultural precinct are being considered for the 5.8ha old Royal Adelaide Hospital site, as part of a push to shelve plans for a high school there.
It is understood major developers are set to be asked within weeks to prepare expressions of interest in redeveloping the site, which is unrivalled in Adelaide’s CBD and will become vacant when the hospital moves to its new West End site next year.
This is likely to result in multi-million dollar concept plans by the end of the year for a major housing and commercial development, in return for which, it is understood a successful developer would be asked to substantially fund a major arts and cultural space.
The plans are also expected to reuse many of the existing 25 buildings.
The plans for the RAH are also expected to include a music performance area, returning some land to the adjacent Adelaide Botanic Garden, restaurants, cafes and a hotel.
Plans for a high school on the current Royal Adelaide Hospital site may have been shelved.
Senior Government sources have told The Advertiser that consideration is being given to locating the new school elsewhere in the East End, or near the existing Adelaide High School, on West Tce.
Planning Minister John Rau in February refused to rule out suggestions that another site would be chosen for the second CBD high school for 1000 students by 2019, promised by Labor at last year’s election.
Mr Rau, in a written statement, yesterday said only: “At this point, no decision has been made.”
The push for a major commercial redevelopment of the old RAH site, coupled with an arts and cultural space, is being driven by the need to have the site used throughout the day and night, as it currently is by the hospital.

The push for a major commercial redevelopment of the old RAH site, coupled with an arts and cultural space, is being driven by the need to have the site used throughout the day and night, as it currently is by the hospital.
This is to ensure East End and Rundle St businesses keep the benefit of having significant numbers of people in the area beyond school hours and, critically, on weekends.
Lord Mayor Martin Haese told The Advertiser he backed a mixed-use development, including some facilities for the nearby universities, arts areas, medical uses, offices, homes, and the return of some land to the Botanic Garden.
Mr Haese said the area needed to be “activated” on weekends, in particular, or a significant opportunity to enliven the East End would be squandered.
The Lord Mayor suggested the heritage buildings along Frome Rd be transformed into up-market hotels and those on North Tce be used for a globally significant arts or cultural tourism area.
Mr Haese also suggested an open pedestrian corridor to connect Frome Rd to the Botanic Garden.
Riverbank Authority chairman Andrew McEvoy, whose group co-ordinates development on the old RAH site, last month trumpeted its potential to business leaders at a Brand South Australia seminar.
“I think there’s a significant opportunity for something really exciting at the old Royal Adelaide site,” the former Tourism Australia chief said.
It is understood the Government’s process for the old RAH site will involve publicly seeking expressions of interest from developers for 60 days, starting next month or in July. These will then be winnowed to about two to four developers, which would then develop master plans.
By the end of this year, the State Government would then have a firm idea of market-driven plans for site.
An arts, cultural or similar major public space would be significantly funded by a successful developer, in a model similar to that used for the Festival Centre precinct or Sydney Harbour’s giant Barangaroo precinct.
Property tycoon Lang Walker is funding a 1560-space carpark as part of the $610 million Festival Plaza redevelopment announced in March; the 6ha Barangaroo Point park will be funded by developers of a commercial precinct.
Labor committed $85 million before last March’s state election to building the new high school, which would specialise in health and sciences.
Announcing the Government’s vision for the site in February last year, Premier Jay Weatherill said the final master plan would allow for “small” commercial ventures, but the “dominant” use would be public education.
The Liberals in February warned Labor was preparing to break the promise to build the school there, citing Mr Rau’s statement to Parliament that “a very detailed consideration” of options for the “complex” site was being undertaken.
Senior Labor sources told The Advertiser the promise was conceived as part of an unsuccessful bid to recapture the seat of Adelaide and voters likely would not be overly distressed if the high school were developed elsewhere.
Before the state election, the Liberals vowed to continue the old RAH as a private medical precinct.
East End property tycoon Theo Maras this week branded the RAH site Australia’s best undeveloped city site.

Location of new high school in Adelaide CBD revealed

UniSA’s Reid Building on Frome Rd, which will become the site of a new city high school.
ADELAIDE’S new city high school will open in 2019, with a special focus on health and education, and be based in a refurbished building on Frome Rd.
The State Government has made the announcement this afternoon, after speculation it may back away from an election promise to put the school on the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site.
Premier Jay Weatherill today said it would cater for 1000 students and be constructed following a refurbishment of the Reid Building on Frome Road, as revealed by The Advertiser last month.
The building will be purchased along with surrounding land from the University of South Australia.
“This new city high school will be a world-class facility and is likely to be in high demand from parents living in the city and inner suburbs who are seeking the best educational outcomes for their children,” he said.
“The school will specialise in health and sciences, preparing young South Australians for jobs in some of our fastest growing industries.
“The Government is investing $85 million into building the school, which will transform the current UniSA Reid Building into one of the nation’s best public high schools.”
The Reid Building and surrounding lands will be purchased from the University of South Australia for $30 million.
Deputy Premier John Rau said the Reid Building was the best choice for the new school, with the building requiring less internal reconstruction and was close to open space and transport.
“The State Government has been in discussions with UniSA over purchasing the building since it was identified as a possibility,” he said.
“The university are looking to move these existing services to their new building currently under construction on North Terrace, consolidating their current research effort.
“Finalising the location of the new city school means we can now continue to plan for the entire Royal Adelaide Hospital site.
“The RAH precinct is an important part of the broader riverbank project, and it presents a fantastic opportunity for development.
“The redevelopment of this precinct needs to continue to draw people to this site and I am confident we will see some exciting plans for this area soon.”
The city high school zone will be expanded to include Bowden, Brompton, Hindmarsh, Hilton, Kurralta Park, Glandore, Black Forest, Nailsworth, Medindie, Medindie Gardens, Gilberton, Walkerville, Collinswood, as well as eastern parts of Torrensville, Mile End, Richmond, Marleston and the section of Clarence Park zoned to Black Forest Primary School.
A committee involving governing councils, teachers, principals and the Department will be established to set new enrolment policies for both city high schools.
Education and Child Development Minister Susan Close said the school zoning included a significant expansion northward as well as reaching further west.
“We’re excited that even more young people in inner-city suburbs will have access to the CBD schools,” Dr Close said.
“We recently increased capacity at Adelaide High School from 1200 to 1450 students, and this new school will allow 1000 more students from Adelaide’s inner-city suburbs to attend a modern, top-class facility.
“With its educational focus on health and science and its proximity to the universities, we hope this high school will encourage young people to pursue tertiary studies and enter careers in those high-demand fields.
“All South Australian students deserve the chance to achieve their potential and the Government is delivering on its commitment to provide the highest-quality education to our youth.”
Work will begin immediately to plan and prepare for the delivery of the new school, with building work expected to commence within the next 12 months.
The Opposition promised a new city high school on West Tce, linked to the existing Adelaide High School by a raised footbridge over the roadway.

This is a really good outcome.
The city gets another high school and the RAH site can be developed into something that will benefit the entire state and not be wasted (hopefully).

I also think this is a good outcome – a good spot for a new CBD school as it will hopefully go some way to filling the obvious gap in high schools around the City’s inner north.
On a side note, I would hope this new positioning will provide a glaring incentive to keep and extend the existing Frome Street bikeway to provide a safe passage for students who choose to cycle to school.

the way things are going with our motoring enthusiast lord mayor (who has been resurfacing pretty much every road in the CBD) it's more likely the Frome St cycleway will be removed to provide parents more road space so they can drive their children to school quicker, and they'll get rid of that footpath bike lane that runs past the uni on that side of Frome St to make it safer for children walking to schoolLlessur2002 wrote:I also think this is a good outcome – a good spot for a new CBD school as it will hopefully go some way to filling the obvious gap in high schools around the City’s inner north.

Better location for sure, though a bit of a bottle-neck. Would have liked to have seen that area expanded into Botanic Park, considering how much open space is surrounding this building. But appropriate choice nonetheless.
A few points worth noting, why are they adamant on retaining an average building when it'd probably be cheaper to build a new modern facility? Surely too, they could have saved $30m by offering done a land swap with UniSA for buildings within the old hospital precinct. Also can't understand how 1,000 students will fit within the area?

[SWP] Re: Former RAH Site (Design Competition)
I'm not convinced this is the best outcome, most likely just the cheapest, it is going to be a shame to see the open space around that area be hemmed in by a school as well.
