Re: Glenelg Tram upgrade (#UC: South Rd Overpass)
SCHEDULED worker breaks and warm weather left the Glenelg tramline overpass at South Rd unfinished yesterday, forcing commuters to rely on substitute bus services during peak hours.
Trams were scheduled to begin travelling over the overpass from first services yesterday, but delays including heat-warped rails and scheduled breaks required by workplace agreements resulted in the deadline being missed.
Rotating crews of workers worked around the clock over the weekend on projects including the overpass, track work at the King William St and South Tce intersection, upgrades to all tramline level crossings and the replacement of overhead power wires and the poles supporting them along the entire line.
Project director Paul Gelston said a hectic program of works along the entire tram line was not over-ambitious and not to blame for the delay.
"The warmer weather on Sunday caught us out," he said.
"In the warmer weather the track can heat up and expand then you have to re-measure and re-cut. That held us up for a couple of hours."
Work continued throughout yesterday and last night to complete the overpass and run safety tests. Mr Gelston last night said regular tram services would be running this morning.

Two of us boarded flexity 107 at 5:17 Tuesday morning for the first scheduled run over the overpass.
The most noticable issue from my perspective was the clunk-clunk at each rail join on the structure - surprisingly noticeable for welded track.
Rather than training drivers before their scheduled runs, trams are being piloted over the section.
Bill.

It just needs a rail grinder to clean up the welds, not sure when they plan to do that though.BillD wrote:Two of us boarded flexity 107 at 5:17 Tuesday morning for the first scheduled run over the overpass.

I went over the overpass! I went over the overpass!
The view to the south and towards to Hills is luxuriously green. I tried to see if there was a reasonable view towards the CBD, but tiresome commuters blocked my line of sight. Still, a fun novelty nonetheless.

You can probably get a better view of the Hills on the Daws Road/Marion Road train overpass.Omicron wrote:I went over the overpass! I went over the overpass!

H 367 at Brighton Road by new Bayside Village shopping centre - I assumed it doing test runs across the South Road tram overpass, but it was getting well into the peak, so I didn't chase it - Tuesday:

I think those test runs are for the tourist shuttle, but I could be wrong.

Good to see the H class still about - tourism should be a good draw.Xaragmata wrote:H 367 at Brighton Road by new Bayside Village shopping centre - I assumed it doing test runs across the South Road tram overpass, but it was getting well into the peak, so I didn't chase it - Tuesday:

I was at the depot to see Citadis 203 return from its usual morning run and was pleasantly surprised when 204 came out on test. I went up to the overpass and waited to take a shot of it coming back from town.
Note to the mid-left of the shot, workers are positioning the slabs which make up the pedestrian/cycle path.

The side panelling is being attached to the bridge tonight.
Re: Glenelg Tram upgrade (#UC: South Rd Overpass)
