[COM] Re: Victoria Park
I went for a ride around there yesterday and was informed that they are digging a large hole and filling it in again...
There is some contaminated soil being removed.

The guy on the excavator said he didn't know. I tried ACC on that point but I got shunted around a bit and had to go. I'll keep at it though. What contaminated the soil?
From the site of the digging, I wouldn't have thought it was the Clipsal race at fault.
[COM] Re: Victoria Park
Our heritage parklands contaminated? SHOCK, HORROR !! Where the PPS when you need them, they should be digging if they feel like the gardians. Oh thats right, they like planting trees and shuffling paper, nothing too strenuous.
It probably is from the clipsal, too many people pissing out the back of the old grandstands.

given it was a horse track for how many years?
I pretty confident most of us could at least have a rough guess at what the contamination is

err I'm thinking more of whole horses.....
I can't imagine they had the same issues in the early 1900's just digging a whole and putting dead horses in it as we do.
saying that, a signifcant amount of manure can contaminate the soil, it just needs to have the chance of getting into the underground water system and they will make you dig it up.
[COM] Re: Victoria Park
I don't know. Centennial Park always looks nice, and that's full of dead things.
[COM] Re: Victoria Park
Speaking of horse s**t, I saw this documentary on foxtel the other day which dealt with exactly this topic. Turns out that the fungus which grows on the masticated grass a horse excretes out the back passage has these spores which shoot off at 20,000 g's. The fastest accelerating thing on the planet apparently.stumpjumper wrote:Torn up bettings tickets? Horse sh*t is hardly a contaminant.
To me that makes horse s**t something not to f**k with.

Toxic soil found in Parklands
The Advertiser, 6 November 2010
TOXIC soil has been found in Victoria Park and Adelaide City Council began digging it up yesterday.
Hydrocarbons from 100-year-old street sweepings and asphalt were found in the soil and toxic sections will be removed to a depth of 20cm as a precaution.
It will cost $1m but Lord Mayor Michael Harbison said the soil wasn't overly dangerous.
``Children have been leaping over and playing in this soil for centuries,'' he said.
Mr Harbison said it was not the only area affected by old waste management practices.
``Wherever we dig in the Parklands these days we find contamination.''
A council spokesman said there was no risk to the public, as it had passed a State Health Department assessment.

"It will cost $1m" Is the Advertiser rounding everything up to the next million these days?
