Off course this will be a white elephant, the State Government never learns!!! another AAMI in the making.
With upgrades to public transport this thing should be built in the CBD near the train station or Adelaide Oval
etc. Along with a new basketball/entertainment centre, new multipurpose stadium and new tennis centre.

But the worse thing about this SAC is the poor poor location of that GP plus... It should be relocated and
an adequate car-park built for the SAC. Can only imagine some poor bugger trying to get a park to see a
doctor whilst a major event is on at the SAC. Just very very poor forward planning.

Actually, the open lot pictured in the render is only the tip of the parking iceberg. The image links to the article on the ABC, which mentions that there's a multi-story carpark included in the project.

I don't think that we can really compare the swimming centre to AAMI - it will draws hundreds to low thousands of people for most of the time, where at AAMI or Adelaide Oval you're talking about tens of thousands.

Westfield Marion is next door with thousands of car parks. I cant see this being a problem. Could be a nice $$$ earner for Westfield.

I thought Marion constantly had a shortage of parking probkem, especially on weekends (which is when, I would imagine, people would most use the centre)- so wouldn't the problem be shoppers using the swim centre's parks?

Not sure, the $100m includes the GP Plus Health Care Centre as well, did the original costing have that ? What is the cost minus that other building ?

The big blue fence appeared just before the launch event. Nothing at all has occurred on site since then though.

State Aquatic Centre and GP Plus Health Care Centre at Marion
Woodhead and Peddle Thorp are working together on the design of South Australia’s new State Aquatic Centre and GP Plus Health Care Centre at Marion.
The $100m development will provide South Australia with a FINA compliant aquatic and recreation facility, catering for elite and recreational users. The GP Plus Health Centre is designed to meet a service delivery model for GP Plus and aims to achieve high quality health care, offering a wide range of health services within an accessible and pleasant environment. Construction is due to commence shortly.

The two facilities and associated carpark co-exist on the same masterplanned site. The masterplan and urban design solution is based on a public plaza which links to the site the Oaklands Station and the Marion Wetland Centre. The masterplan is a part of a broader TOD based masterplan for the precinct and the plaza will provide an enjoyable, safe and secure environment for the visitors and users of the new and existing facilities.

Preliminary site work began on South Australia’s new Aquatic Centre and GP Plus Health Care Centre on Friday 16 October 2009. An official groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Marion site with over 250 guests attending, which included Federal Sports Minister, Kate Ellis, State Minister for Infrastructure, Pat Conlon, State Minister for Sport and Recreation, Michael Wright, and the City of Marion Mayor, Felicity-Ann Lewis
The State Aquatic Centre and GP Plus Centre is a design and construct project being delivered by Candetti Construction with Woodhead and Peddle Thorp Architects as Architects in Association. The $100m development has been designed by Woodhead and Peddle Thorp Architects and will provide South Australia with a world class, FINA compliant aquatic and recreation facility, catering for elite and recreational users. The facility comprises of one main 50-metre pool, one 50 metre Diving/Water Polo pool, 4,500 seating capacity, 1000sqm of gym space and leisure water of 1,000sqm including a ‘learn to swim’ pool.

Woodhead has completed the design for the GP Plus Health Care Centre to meet a service delivery model for GP Plus. The design aims to achieve high quality health care, offering a wide range of health services, within an accessible and pleasant environment.

The centre will also provide a foundation for increased support to manage chronic disease and will be tailored to meet the needs of the community.

Woodhead has also designed the addition of a multi story car park and public plaza which links both centres on the Marion Domain.

Woodhead has been working on this project since 2004 with the team lead by David King-Jones and comprising Kym Hughes, Sandy Kuchel, Ben Mountford, Vicki Jacobs and Marlew Cook.

Both projects are expected to be completed by mid to late 2010.
