the whole point of moving to the city was to increase crowds. if crowds were expected to be the same as at west lakes then the move and redevelopment would never had happened

However, I do think we will see more sellout games now that Adelaide is doing well, as indicated at the Collingwood game a few weeks ago.

Adelaide Oval in 24/7 booze bid





ADELAIDE Oval will be allowed to serve alcohol 24 hours a day if an application for a new liquor licence is granted.

The oval’s Stadium Management Authority (SMA) has applied to Consumer and Business Services Commissioner Anne Gale for a Special Circumstances Licence.

As part of the licence, the oval’s Southern Plaza would be able to serve alcohol round-the-clock even on non-event days.

The City Council has raised concerns about the plan, with one councillor likening it to a “nightclub”.

Under the oval’s existing liquor licence, held by the SACA, alcohol can only be served until 8pm or two hours before and after a sporting event, whichever finishes later.

SMA chief executive Andrew Daniels said a 24 hour licence would allow “flexibility” for future events.

He said Adelaide Oval would not be used as a pub.

“There will definitely be no pokies at Adelaide Oval,” he said.

“We have no nightclub planned.”

Mr Daniels said the SMA wanted the option to screen live sporting events, such as the Soccer World Cup, in the new Southern Plaza, between Adelaide Oval and the River Torrens.

The City Council discussed the application at a meeting this week.

It deferred making a recommendation until next week, when it will consider a fresh report on the issue.

Cr Mark Hamilton told the meeting he was concerned the SMA wanted an “unlimited licence” for the oval precinct.

“We don’t want a 24/7 nightclub on this site,” he said.

The council’s existing policy on liquor licensing requires a break in trading between 3am-7am.

This is in-line with SA Police’s city-wide recommendations.

Im a Port supporter so sell outs are kinda foriegn to me, you must admit though that the crows in recent years havent exactally had them busting down the doors to get in. The point of increasing crowds should be seen in the context of the whole season for both clubs, not a few isolated games here or there. Also you should look at just bums on seats but the greater economic effect that it will have on the CBD as to reasons to move.

people in general have gotten lazy and tired of travelling to football park, being rained on etc. adelaide oval is much closer to the population centre of the metro area, west lakes is nowhere near it.
the quality of performances dished up by both Power and Crows in the past 8 years or so would have a lot to do with dwindling crowds

No cranes yet. If you want to take some photos the bits of the light towers are lying on the ground in the North East corner near the cathedral. Pretty impressive, their massive. Theres also some friggin huge earth mounds near to the old Norther gates.

There are no cranes, from what I have seen there is one Favco crane base on site, and I am sure the southern stand will get two, as will the eastern stand.

That 24/7 alcohol proposal sounds fine. Makes sense when many international matches can be played at 2am or 4am here in the morning

Exactly, this isn’t Qatar. If the Socceroos are playing Overseas and AO wants to show the game live and generate a bit of a live site mentality, what’s wrong with being able to serve a few beers? You can really see the wowserism coming through in that article can’t you? Can see some self important ACC councillor pledging to just make the northern riverbank precinct a dry-zone *embarassed*

I've got no problem with the grassed sections being a dry zone to ermm...keep policy consistent.

i'm ok as long as the cost of security, etc is born by the SMA and not the taxpayer.

I'm fairly sure the SMA is just 'grandstanding'. Normal pub hours plus some sort of special allowance for late-evening sporting events probably makes more sense.

I also presume SACA members must vote on it with 75% needing to agree?
