I'm loving this development too. This is my dream to have this stadium in the city I love and a few years ago thought it was an impossible dream.

From Adelaide Now
Government approves Adelaide Oval footbridge

A KEY element in the multi-billion-dollar revamp of Adelaide Oval and the riverbank precinct is a step closer with the State Government approving the location of a footbridge across the River Torrens.
The Sunday Mail can reveal that Cabinet has selected a final design and location for the estimated $40 million bridge linking Adelaide Oval with the southern side of the Torrens and the Adelaide Casino, Convention Centre and Festival Centre.

The southern end of the footbridge will be positioned to the west of the Festival Centre, in line with the Adelaide Railway Station concourse; its northern end will stop just short of War Memorial Drive, instead of being elevated over the road and taking patrons to the door of the new $535 million Adelaide Oval.

Infrastructure Minister Patrick Conlon and department CEO Rod Hook will present the final bridge design to Adelaide City Council on Tuesday night.

The council must approve the siting of the bridge on the northern side of the Torrens as it will be built on the parklands.

Construction is expected to start early next year with the Government aiming to finish the project in time for the 2013-14 Ashes Test cricket series.

Adelaide's arts community and the Stadium Management Authority had wanted the southern end of the bridge located between the Festival Theatre and Dunstan Playhouse, spilling people into a new Festival Centre plaza and close to a planned new 1350-space carpark, a refurbished arts precinct and potential future commercial ventures.

The Sunday Mail understands that the location would have required a higher bridge span, compromising views across the Torrens, and it was felt it would be too close to the existing King William St bridge.

The Convention Centre had agitated for the bridge to be built closer to its door, but the Government has remained steadfast in its desire to link Adelaide Oval with public transport. The bridge is an integral part of the multi-billion-dollar redevelopment of the Adelaide Riverbank into a commercial and entertainment hub.

Among proposals contained in a draft masterplan for the area are:

AN upgraded, more visually appealing casino and hotel precinct;

WETLANDS at Pinky Flat;

AN upgraded Festival Square, flanked by a new multi-storey office/retail building;

NEW office buildings on North Tce;

A RESTAURANT and cafe precinct in front of the casino and InterContinental Hotel.

Premier Jay Weatherill has previously said the Riverbank development is at the "heart of the State Government's plans to revitalise the city".

I don't want to sound like a typical Adelaide Now reader(I fkn hate those whingers!) but why isn't it being elevated over War Memorial Drive at the Northern end?

cost?
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.

Cost reasons and War Memorial Dr will be closed to traffic on game days, hence there is no need to elevate.

If you go back a few pages, you'll see we already discussed this a couple months ago. I, too, think the bridge should be elevated over WMD, but it seems there's not much support for that idea from fellow SA-ers. :(
It's = it is; its = everything else.
You're = you are; your = belongs to.
Than = comparative ("bigger than"); then = next.

Look, I suppose in the bigger scheme of things, if they're planning on shutting off access to WM drive on match days its not really a big deal, but watch it get blown up by the Negative Nellies at the 'tiser. If I ever go to AdOval for games, my bus drops me off next to the cross of sacrifice gardens so I'll be entering from the East. The only time I could imagine it being a problem, might be if there is a Socceroos or Wallabies etc game on the big screens at the Southern Plaza at 'pitch black o'çlock' and the crowd spills towards the roadway. remember the SMA has asked for a booze licence, would hate to see boozed up fans getting skittled:(

If there is a big enough event to need that road blocking off they will do so. Or even putting a large pedestrian crossing there is a possibility.

I don't have a strong opinion on the Oval side of the bridge regarding it ending on the riverbank or being elevated. I do think however that the bridge going straight to the railway station concourse is the best possible solution. It makes it most convenient for people coming into town on public transport, while also leaving over amenities close for people who want to use them.

So the bridge proposal is before council tonight then?
Hopefully some hints/renders as to the design aren't far off.

For sure. Acquire and sell off Clipsal and ETSA Park to combine netball, basketball, the odd tennis fixture and smaller concerts, etc.. in one modern, retractable roof stadium in city centre. Keep Ent Centre for the larger events.
