The old david jones was a nicer interior than the present, but it was a public liability (health risk). The old one was full of asbestos and it was cheaper to rebuild an entire new one than try to get all the asbestos out.

I had been wondering for years now, just exactly where the lego exhibition was held. I remember it as a kid, and would always marvel at it. I always thought it was part of John Martins before it became what it is now. But, all this time, it was a part of Myer.

I do agree, Myer right now is an absolute travesty. It's all closed up from the fourth floor onwards, the sails are dodgy as. Half the shops are closed, its nothing like it used to be. For a project that costed $1b, it well and truly was a waste of money, and dare I say - I think it just needs to be demolished... again.

Hi Shuz. The "permanent, free" lego exhibition was not in Myer but was in Dazzleland, on level 4 in the exact spot that is now the Fernwood Fitness centre. I say "permanent, free" because that's what is was announced as when it first opened. However after a while it was no longer free, and then as we now know, it was no longer permanent! So sad because Adelaide needs things like this!

The withdrawn refers to the ACCs call for the retention of the façade of the Harris Scarfe Building.

I understand that best guestimates are that work should start around June, assuming no further delays.

I strongly disagree. Where the Myer Centre is an example of horrible design the David Jones building is the exact opposite and it has been a wonderful success. Until reading your comment I've never even heard of anyone not liking it. It was very popular when built and I think retains a stylish appearance and I expect it to date very well. I like it, a lot, and as an Adelaide resident am very proud if it.

Well, IMO the building has a glaring fault - the Charles St facade. Starting from North Terrace, after you've gone past the entrance at the corner we've got blank wall, service entrances, blank wall, window with a display arranged to be seen from the inside, long blank wall, another inside-out window display, entry stairs, blank wall, display cavity, another long blank wall, and finally you've reached the corner at the Mall. And this for a street that connects the Mall with the University and the Museum/library/Art gallery. It could -- and should -- be a bustling active street; if DJ's had bothered to build store frontages along there to lease to businesses that would appeal to the students. In fact, that would be a better location for their whole food court (apart from seating and weather, of course) I feel sorry for the bubble-tea place on the other side, who face a granite slab that they could almost see themselves in.

And doing that would impose a small cost on the builder for a considerable gain to the area. In fact, the "cost" may even be a money earner, depending on the rent they could charge for a shop along that street.

The Bubble Tea place closed a long time ago. Come back to Adelaide! lol

Also I'd say similar things about the interface with all the former shopping centre entrances on the western side. DJ's decided to CUT access to those places on all levels. John Martin's former building used to connect at basement, ground and first floors at least. Result; a four story dead mall in the heart of the CBD.

DJ's were less than neighbourly to the shopping centre, Charles Street and the "What about me, DJ's?" building with the nice artwork (if you know what I mean) when they built that utilitarian box.

Add me to the list of negatives, I'm afraid. The epitome of all things beige, safe and bland, and completely devoid of any character, class or luxury.

I have come across some information as well as a new image of the development.

Wallbridge & Gilbert have been appointed as the structural and civil engineering consultants for this project.

Furthermore in the picture it appears that the building may have been re-designed as the fins appear to have been removed and the building seems to include more glass: (image attributed to the Buchan Group)

What aspect is this viewed from - Rundle or Grenfell? (excuse the ignorance). The bldg appears set well back - I had thought it approached Rundle and/or Grenfell more closely. Nevertheless, It has a pleasing appearance, even with the fins removed. Hope they get on with it soon. Quite special in that part of the CBD.

Like AtD said, I don't like the gaps in the awnings over the footpath.
