The Federal Politics Thread

#241 Post by Dog » Sun Dec 08, 2013 8:34 pm

Waewick, I tend to agree about Indonesia, perhaps with the exception of their loony extremists.

In regard to both China and Indonesia, I am sure they are and were both fully aware of Tony Abbott's hairy chested approach to international affaires and in Indonesia's case, Abbott's high sensitivity to refugee boats and any adverse publicity.

Both Indonesia and China will be using any Abbott/Bishop gaffs and insecurities to their full advantage.
I suspect as new boys will be on the back foot in trade negotiations on both accounts.

In Indonesia case they would dearly love to buy huge tracts of NT cattle country to supply their domestic beef industry and renegotiate gas and oil deals in the Timor sea. (Neither an easy tasks for a government having to pander to the anti foreign ownerships views of its country party friends)

In China's case we are about to recommence free trade negotiations, Abbott has promised to bring these off with in 12 months.
Last year Australia-China Trade Talks were stalled by an Investment Row .
"Apr 18, 2013 - Australia's trade talks with China have stalled after Canberra rejected Beijing's telecommunications firm Huawei" I think from work on the NBN.

I won't be surprised to see the "new boys" suddenly need to approve Indonesian "capital investments" in the NT cattle stations and some "new" joint venture natural gas and oil developments. We may even see something like the Howard era $300m investment in the military run Indonesian forestry industries or perhaps some softening on views in clearing rain forests.

And in China's case all Alexander Downers lobbying on behalf of the Big Chinese Communications Giant, Huawei may pay off and we see some "limited" Huawei involvement in at least some communications work.

In international affairs showing your hairy chest is a bit like showing your hand at cards and are no match for experienced poker faces of China and Indonesia.

News poll confirms that last week's Morgan poll with the big swing against the Abbott government is continuing.
Last weeks Morgan Pool Identified the lack of woman in cabinet started the trend with woman voters moving away first (55% now supporting Labor)
Attempting to double, then abolishing the debt ceiling has further shaken voters belief that the Abbott government was going to reduce debt and their other key election promise to stop the boats has run into trouble with Indonesia with 4 boats arriving last week.
Backflips and conflict with the states on education, escalating diplomatic troubles with China and East Timor, along with internal coalition bickering, leaks and conflict over support for Holden's has left the first 100 days of the Abbott government in a shambles.
Labor's two party lead now 52% to 48% a turn around of 5.5% since the election, that equates over 800,000 voters changing their minds on this government just since the election.

Dog, you can huff and puff, but won't be getting an election tomorrow. Save your breath.

If the polls continue as is. Of course they won't.

Well done Dog, this is what we were going to do with the last government, but no one took it on board. We were going to list all the pre-election promises and see if they made good on them.

Keep it up Dog, but keep it non-partisan. :applause: If you do it well I'll split it off to another thread.

Mr Abbott made the promise to spend his first week in an Aboriginal community at the Garma Festival during the election campaign.

Another Day another backflip apparently even the much criticised Liberals promised 25 megabit per second NBN is not achievable.

Image"The Coalition's policy promised to give most Australians the option to connect to a 25 megabit per second network by 2016, but the review found that was extremely unrealistic."

I guess in the context of how far Labor were out, it isn't that bad.

Still,it is going to be interesting how the NBN ends up, looks like a fair bit of misinformation from both sides is going to ultimately cost the development a lot of relevance.

Turnbull's announcement today on the Coalition's alternative Broadband is a complete demolition of the NBN, even worse than previous...

Check the NBN thread under Transport/Infrastructure development topic, including The Guardian article.
Coalition’s new NBN: one in three Australian premises will miss out.
