If you're in the area you can get really close on the ground to watch the teardown in progress.

Some more pics of the ongoing demolition from yesterday and today. It's been quite a dramatic process with lots of booms and shaking felt from my office. People are glued to the windows watching the show. Very impressive stuff.

They aren't messing around. Just to be clear though, this isn't technically part of the original GPO Building is it? Also, does anyone have any pictures of what the inside looks like now especially the main post office area with the dome? I really hope that section remains unchanged.

So the original post office was built in the 1870s (this includes the clock tower, the facade and internals that front the corner of Franklin Street/KWS), there's a great picture showing this on the GPO's Wikipedia page. The rear of the building currently being demolished was build in the 1920s, interestingly so too was the KWS facade that hides this section, the architects of the time obviously did their best to match up the facade, however if you look at the building from the other side of the KWS you can notice the differences between the original 1870s facade and the 1920s additional facade.

The now hotel building will tuck itself behind the 1920s facade, rather conveniently for the developer because the 1920s addition to the GPO so far as I know has no heritage protections, only the facade and the internals of the original 1870s portion of the building are protected.

Regarding your question on what the original internals look like for the GPO, the best I could suggest is searching up 'inside the Adelaide GPO' and you'll likely find pictures of the old Australia Post outline that closed a couple of years back. Like you, I hope they don't change it too much but the likelihood is that it will be significantly altered for retail purposes.

I hope they don't damage the clock tower whilst the demolition is underway. They're very close to it.

I wouldn't worry too much, structurally the clock town is separate from the portion of building undergoing demolition.

good good. Wouldn't want that 154 year old clock to be damaged.

Nice shot Crawf!

I notice the perimeter pile wall looks it's already been completed and capped, and I reckon I can spy the work for crane base at the bottom of the photo, at the edge of the fence.
