Here's 20 things you didn't know about the new Adelaide Oval

IT may look like a construction site today but Adelaide Oval will soon be a state-of-the-art cricket and AFL stadium.

MILES KEMP reveals what sport lovers can expect when work, which began in February, finishes in March 2014 ready for the football season.

1 NO spectator will be more than 40m from the nearest food or beverage outlet, or a toilet.

2 THERE will be five large replay screens: Two on the southern plaza, two in the southern pockets at 125sq m each and one of 180sq m in the north. This compares with the present replay screen on the northern mound which is 80sq m.

3 THERE will be capacity to handle around 100,000 phone calls that will be made during the average major football match, as well as 1.2 million data requests through mobile phones.

4 GETTING caught short won't be a problem; there will be seven family toilets, 36 disabled toilets, 139 male toilets, 559 urinals and 563 female toilets.

I cannot believe the amount of whinging and general crap that come out of the comments on Adelaide Now.

I bet just about every one of those people who will use the new stadium will love it. I think its great, well overdue and a good replacement to that so called other footy stadium we have.

That is quite a strange article indeed. I think it's simply commenting on the fact that the ground doesn't look very nice at the moment because it's a construction site, but it certainly comes off as being far more negative than that.

Interesting to read some of the comments from the cricketing community on the redevelopment with the test match starting today. Most seem to be a bit disappointed with the loss of history, beauty, etc, and are blaming the needs/wants of the AFL. It's a bit frustrating, really -- Adelaide is ridiculed and pilloried for being backwards and old-fashioned, but when it comes to the cricket, we're castigated for moving into the 21st century! Anyway, for what it's worth, I reckon most of the cricket aficionados will be pleasantly surprised once it's all done. Let's just hope that the drop-in pitches they start using next season don't alter the characteristics of the wicket.
It's = it is; its = everything else.
You're = you are; your = belongs to.
Than = comparative ("bigger than"); then = next.

Anyone notice how the city looks far less impressive with the demise of the Bradman stand when watching the cricket coverage. Also looks much further way.

BTW - the oval stadium is developing nicely - will be very impressive on completion and will still have a certain uniqueness to it when compared to others.

The "historic" and iconic view of the hills was lost years ago when those ugly Chappel circus tents went up on the Eastern side. I dont understand why some people still bang on about it.The new members stand finished off what was left of the historic feel of the ground, but lets face it, the whole place was hot, crowded and well past it's use by date for modern spectator sport. In the current economic climate we are lucky to have this developement at all. I only wonder how many years before those moreton bay figs go and the new Northern stand is proposed. I cant help but think it will look a bit unfinished.

I think the opposite. The city looks great on TV.

Sorry, skyliner, I'm with crawf on this one.
I have been watching the cicket on TV and our city looks fabulous. The vista, including views of the hills, has that nice feel about it for a city of our size.

The weather has been great and the commentators have left no one in doubt of what the finished oval will look like. The only thing that I feel is missing is the extra atmosphere and colour in the public areas (drastically reduced by the building works). The themed groups, costumes, hats, banners etc., picked up by the cameras as they roam the crowd, add to the vibe. The members are a pretty stodgy lot by comparison.

I agree with Crawf. I was at the oval sitting near the scoreboard on Thursday and the city
looked really impressive in the background. It's a bit of a pity that this view is going to be blocked
by a grandstand.

This is why we need to start building taller.

Saturday at the cricket.
Sadly found out my dad subscribes to the pity this is the last time we'll see the Hills group:(

Behind the old scoreboard, you can see where SACA have set up up bunch of food tents on the new Wooden Decking for the punters on the Hill (Yiros, pizza, hotdogs etc)

Best Part of an Adelaide Oval Test is the bit hardly anyone gets to see..the Village Green behind the Members Stand. (I reckon millions of dollars worth of business is conducted here in an informal setting over 5 days.)

Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.

new ceiling fans! worked a treat, especially on day 2 & 3 when the temperature was high.

not to forget ye ol' heritage listed scoreboard

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Thanks, Kasey and Wayno for the photos from the Test. Brilliant! Lots of angles, different perspectives for we 'get to see it only on TV' folk. The fans (as in mechanical) look huge.

That's because the food outlets at the back of the Chappell Stands are gone, and they also used to setup a few small food marquees just behind there between the scoreboard and the stands.
Along with the temporary marquees you've got in that photo, directly behind the hill on the new decking there is some permanent food outlet there as well. And toilets as well.

Not this test. The amount of alcohol they go through when the full oval is in use is astounding. Truck loads of kegs.

Why on earth do they have Victoria Shitter on the heritage scoreboard? :sly:
