Good news.
Frome St Bikeway to be officially opened, 14 May, 2014.
The Frome Street Bikeway will be open for use for bike riders of all abilities to ride more safely in the Adelaide CBD.
Launching on the morning of Wednesday 14 May 2014, everyone is invited to come and see the new bikeway.

Adelaide City Council are offering breakfast treats along the route from Greenhill Road to Pirie Street between 7:30am and 9:00am, so come and collect something to eat and drink from several stops along the bikeway.

If you live around the area, are curious about the bikeway, or will use it to commute, come and celebrate with the community.

It was disappointing to see a few negative comments in the media eg 'safer for cyclists but clogged street". However, others were very appreciative of this new, safer option to traverse the city.

The Frome St Bikeway will be open in time for the Velo-City Global Conference 2014 (May 27-30)
Velo-city is the world’s premier international cycling planning conference. The four day event offers delegates from around the world a chance to share best practices for creating and sustaining cycling-friendly cities, where bicycles are valued as part of daily transport and recreation.

Cr Anne Moran is leading a push to get the ACC’s full lighting budget to be spent north of the Torrens - in North Adelaide.
ADELAIDE City Council’s $1.3 million lighting spending budget must be spent fully in North Adelaide, some councillors say.
Cr Anne Moran explained her council should be required to spend its entire budget for street and park lights on North Adelaide to prevent sexual attacks...
Adelaide Talks
http://adelaidetalks.com.au/north-adela ... e-torrens/
Elsewhere, Anne Moran is reported as saying that 'North Adelaide had been forgotten by the Council for too long''...
And her ward has been 'living on a shoestring...'

Council elections coming up soon?

This guy's an absolute moron and exactly what Adelaide doesn't need. He had a small section in the Advertiser (or possibly the Messenger ) a week or so ago listing his main policies. It was absolutely terrifying. Extremely anti bike/public transport. Anything that would just turn the CBD into a giant road network into which pedestrians should be afraid to venture.

Can't quite remember all the points now but I do remember he wanted to remove all bus lanes from the CBD, ban empty buses from entering or waiting in the CBD, remove the Frome Street bike lanes and 'reassess' all other bike lanes, remove all right turn restrictions etc etc.

It really feels that Adelaide's just beginning to bloom right now and it would be such a shame if an ignorant old dinosaur such as Hamilton came along and undid all the good work just so he can live out his rapidly dwindling remaining days trying to recreate the dull and empty CBD he remembers from the 'good old days'.

I am not usually one for personal attacks, but that image with him and the two matching dogs... it feels like it perfectly represents his ideal and narrow minded view of the world. Annoys me so much :wallbash:

News & Discussion: Adelaide City Council

#2600 Post by Dog » Sat May 10, 2014 4:55 am

I drove Frome street for the first time in peak hour tonight for regular Friday night dinner in Hutt street, unfortunately it was gridlock, it took 25 minutes to do 500m with both North South and East West traffic at a stand still of multiple sets of traffic lights. Even saw a couple of angry impatient cars drivers in the bike lane" OK I admit it was raining and getting dark which added to the confusion but I only saw one bike. Not really sure any ones a winner at this stage, if it's only going to be one lane for cars it needs to start at North a Tce, I always thought the section between North Tce and Grenfell to be the most dangerous for bikes and this is the end not done.
I can't help thinking just removing all street parking from one East/West and one North/South CBD road to create bike lanes may have been a better option for both bikes and cars. With the grid lock It even took my dad 35 minutes to get to Hutt street from the central market by bus.

You only saw one bike because they're not operational yet, they open on Wednesday. That also means there's still roadworks, which are contributing to slower movement and can't really be indicative of how traffic flow will be once running. (There's also an element of behavioural change that will have to happen, and that happens gradually. Slowly riders will increase and drivers will start taking different routes, but it won't all happen immediately.)

I'm with you on the North Tce - Pirie Stretch being the most dangerous for riders, and that's exactly the stretch addressed in the next stage. According to the councils website, community consultation for that will be later this year (and they're obviously going to monitor the stretch opening this week and take what they learn into consideration in the design of the next stage).

Mass bike ride planned for Frome Street in mass show of support for the new Frome St Bikeway.
Bike SA is calling for cyclists to join a mass ride of the new separated Frome Street bike lanes to demonstrate support for the controversial project when it opens next Wednesday morning.

Cyclists will gather at the South Parklands end of Frome Street to cycle along the new lane at 8am.
Bike SA chief executive Christian Haag said the ride would help demonstrate support for the controversial separated bike lane project.
“We’d love to see a couple of thousand people."

“We know that 60 per cent of Australians say that they’d ride more if they thought it was safer to do so, and we know that separated bike lanes provide that level of safety.
“Those naysayers will see that it’s an important addition to the Adelaide City transport network.”

Councillor Anne Moran will bring a motion to next Tuesday’s council meeting for the newly constructed garden beds in the parking lane of Frome Street to be taken out, in order to allow for the parking lane to become a driving lane during peak hour.

The Frome Street bikeway will open with one bike lane beside the curb, one parking lane with planter beds beside that and one driving lane in both directions.

“If you truly want to make the city a bike city, my scheme accommodates cars when they need the lane and leaves the off-street bike path exactly the same,” she said.
She said she had been in contact with construction workers on Frome Street, who told her the planter boxes could easily be lifted from the road.

“You could do it on lots of other roads and really the only people that suffer are the people that want to park during rush hour, and I don’t think people are expecting to park in rush hour on streets anyway.”
Moran’s proposal would retain the planter beds until after the Velo-City global cycling event at the end of this month.

But Christian Haag said giving over the parking lane to driving at peak times would diminish safety for cyclists.
“What’s the point of having a separated bike lane if it’s not separated?” he said.
“I think that that is inappropriate and unnecessary.”

Haag said giving over the parking lane to driving would be far more complicated than merely lifting the planter boxes from the road.
“Clearly, any change to the engineering of that space would need to be done at the beginning.

“We have this rather odd situation where, in all likelihood, the existing entire bikeway network and planter boxes would need to be removed, the road would need to be resurfaced while the council undertake the re-engineering and the redesign.”

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said the council should be open to all options.
“Council should keep an open mind to the best way to balance all commuter needs. We will carefully monitor the bike lane and consider alternatives based on factual data and consultation on stage two,” he said.

Talkback radio and other sections of the media are busy whipping up a frenzy against the Frome St Bikeway.
Other cities in Australia and other developed countries are encouraging cyclists by developing more bike paths and various types of safer pathways for cyclists. Here are extracts from 2 articles which publicize the rationale and positives of safer cycling pathways and the mass cycle ride/show of support.

1.ON YER BIKE: Ride to Rundle with Stephen Yarwood
...
The furore that exploded over the Bikeway has stretched the issue out of proportion. Three facts are laid out to us: one, that the perceived ‘anti-car’ position of the City Council (and Yarwood in particular) is an urban myth; two, traffic levels on the two-lane southern parts of Frome St are at the same level as single-lane Rundle and Hindley Streets; three, there are no other viable, long-term options to reduce congestion in a city.
...
The Bikeway has been condemned by doubters – including ACC’s own Mark Hamilton, who will be challenging Yarwood for Lord Mayor in November’s elections – and plagued with rumours about cost (truthfully the Bikeway cost less than one percent of the Council’s transport contribution). But the fact remains that Adelaide is the only mainland state CBD without these dedicated lanes.

The process has been a little “disappointing” for Yarwood.
“I guess I often despair that this [Bikeway] is seen to be radical or controversial, when every other CBD in Australia has already implemented the measures we are talking about.

“I’m not particularly progressive. I’m not particularly radical. I’m just trying to drag Adelaide along to where every other CBD in the entire nation is already at.
...
With 33 kilometres of standard bikelanes added in the last five years and the new separated bikeway being implemented, Adelaide is on its way to becoming – as Yarwood would like – “the greatest cycling city in the southern hemisphere”.
Rip it Up:

And another in Cycling Traveller.

2. Mass cycle in support of Adelaide's Frome Street Bikeway
Following a nasty talk-back radio backlash against Adelaide's new Frome Street Bikeway, Bicycle SA is organising a mass ride for cyclists to show their pedal power.
...
“There are calls for the newly designed Frome Street Bikeway to be ripped up or re-engineered – before one cyclist has even ridden the route,” Bicycle SA said on its website. “This is a watershed moment for Adelaide, and could be the first of many bike lanes to come.”

While the development has been welcomed by cyclists and would-be cyclists, some criticisms have been made by newspaper columnist and talk-back radio hosts who say the new bikeway will create traffic (congestion) along the road. Adelaide City Council came out firing in defence of the bikeway saying that it was key to reducing congestion in the city.

“There are currently 29 north south traffic lanes for cars in the city – there are zero separated bikeway lanes to safely accommodate bike riders,” the Council said. “The changes we have started to make to Frome St will alter this to 27 to 2 – still way in favour of the car and providing a much safer option for riders.”
...
“This is not about Us vs. Them. This is not about Cars Vs. Bikes.
Every person, no matter what form of transport they use, should be able to get from A to B safely."
"If you want cycling culture to move forward, and if you want to see more cycle infrastructure in Adelaide , then bring yourself, your friends, your family and your treadly to Frome Street on Wednesday morning at 8am.”

Still think it was the parking that needed to be removed both sides of Frome road not 2 traffic lanes. It's gone from 4 car lanes 2 parking and 0 bike lanes to 2 cars lanes 2 parking lanes and 2 bike lanes. I think it should be 2 bike lanes and 4 traffic lanes. A concrete strip could still separate bicycles and cars. This would improve the flow for both cars and bikes.

Perhaps, but remove any on-street parking and the squeals would be ten times louder.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

Also, the islands allow for some much needed street landscaping, including additional trees. Frome St has always looked pretty drab and not very people friendly, especially compared to it's counterpart Frome Rd.

Looking at the map (above) there are only 9 new car parks between Flinders and Pirie anyway, so I am only talking about loosing 20 or so parks.
It's a bit like North Tce I think there are less than a dozen parks on the northern side, removing these could create a dedicated bus lane or a bike lane.

Cr Moran raising a motion to have the bike lanes removed on the eve of both a cycling conference AND the official opening of the Frome St Bikeway is nothing short of a huge embarrassment.

Seriously? This grandstanding by Moran and Hamilton is absolutely ridiculous. I saw ACC tweet something about an amendment to the motion, meaning the opening can still proceed. Did she really try to cancel the opening as well?
